ERAC Q2 2018 Newsletter
President's Message
In May, I made my first presentation of five total to first responder conventions this year; it impressed on me the importance of what we do at ERAC. When we conduct LPG firefighting training or large-scale exercises, attend Transcaer events or offer online training courses, ERAC is supporting first responders across Canada.

We bid adieu to RMA Larry Epp, of Chiliwack, BC, who has worked with ERAC in some capacity since 1997, as he begins the next chapter of his life. In Larry’s own words: “I have had the opportunity to work with [many] people … learning from them and passing on my experiences. Now … I see this chapter in my life closing. The friends and abilities I have gained through being part of this organization is something I don’t take lightly in leaving.”

Also retiring is Earle Nickerson, RMA/TA out of Saint John, NB, who was with ERAC for over 30 years. Earle’s common sense approach to emergency response, and dedication to public safety, shows that this has been far more than just a job for Earl. His influence over and mentorship to countless RMAs over the years will be a lasting legacy.

We also say goodbye and thank you to Jon Veirgever, technical advisor out of Prince George, BC, and RMA Reg Jeckells, of Wainright, AB.

ERAC welcomes Sonny Watson of Saanich, B.C. as an RMA effective May 1.

ERAC is recruiting TAs and RMAs in Saskatchewan and Alberta – contact Don Merriam, Operations Director, 514-714-1075 if interested.
Training and Events

Spring is one of ERAC's busiest seasons for regional training and assessment, and LPG firefighting training.

In the Spotlight: GFL Saskatoon

The GFL Saskatoon response team serves as the ERAC responder for flammable liquids by rail in the region.

A small donation goes a long way
In managing a not-for-profit business such as ERAC, one of the primary concerns is balancing expenses with revenues. For this reason, we ask for donations in acquiring equipment and running training.

2018 Leo Sichewski Bursary Recipient

Caylin Bymoen applied to the ERAC Leo Sichewski Bursary at the encouragement of her father, not expecting to win. But, as she puts it, “you just put yourself out there and hope for the best.” And it worked, as Caylin was the recipient of the $2,000 award.

ERAC Responder Awards Recipients

In order to recognize the efforts of outstanding responders, individuals and teams, ERAC is pleased to announce the winners of our four awards. Congratulations to all of the winners; thank you for your hard work and dedication.

Notification, Activation, Tiers...
What Does It All Mean?

Our industry, uses a lot of terminology. And not all of it may be familiar to you.

Let's tackle one of our most-asked questions:

What is the difference between a notification and an activation? And what are tiers?

SafetySync and Training Course Update

We launched a new interactive training course, Flammable Liquids by Rail Firefighting Introductory Course, on our learning management system (LMS), SafetySync. We also have a new section in SafetySync called Learning Scenarios.

Safety Bulletin: Working On or Near Water

Spring is upon us, with high-water levels due to excessive snow and rainfall. Work on or near water carries various serious risks, which can be managed through the process of risk assessment.
