President's Message
I trust all of you had a safe and enjoyable summer with time spent with family and friends.

You may have heard me say this, but I will reiterate how proud I am to be associated with the dedicated professionals that make up Emergency Response Assistance Canada. Inside the organization, although we have a small team, each one of our employees works diligently to meet the expectation of the regulators, clients and responders we support.

In July, our BC North LPG response team stepped down after 25 years with ERAC. We’re grateful to the team members for their service and dedication. We continue to support our Plan Participants throughout BC with: our new ERAC LPG team, GFL Environmental Inc. out of Prince George; the reinstatement of the RAM Environmental LPG team out of Kamloops; and the Superior Propane LPG team out of Richmond. We also have remedial measures advisors (RMAs) in Dawson Creek, Chetwynd and Prince George, BC.
Dangerous Goods Emergency Management Conference - May 4-6, 2020
It’s back! ERAC’s second Dangerous Goods Emergency Management Conference takes place May 4-6, 2020 in Calgary at Hotel Arts.

We’re excited to announce keynotes Will Gadd, the first person in the world to climb Niagara Falls, and Dr. Kimberley Amirault-Ryan, performance consultant to the NHL, NBA, and Olympians.
We’ll bring session speakers from oil and gas, transporters, government, industry partners and more.

Sponsorship opportunities are available and will move fast!

New this year, we’re offering a free ERAC information session to all Plan Participants on May 4. ERAC’s leadership team will offer in-depth knowledge on emergency response planning, recent changes to the Environmental Emergency (E2) and Transportation of Dangerous Goods (TDG) regulations, and how ERAC is helping your organization to meet all regulatory requirements. Registration for the conference is not mandatory to attend this free information session - sign up for the information session here.

ERAP Explanations:
Implementation, Tiers...

With the changes in TDG regulations this year, you may have noticed new terminology regarding the implementation of ERAPs.

You Need to Re-Register Your E2 Plan

Effective immediately, all facilities subject to the Environmental Emergency (E2) Regulations need to re-register in the new reporting system and adhere to the new reporting deadlines.

Collaborating with FESTI for Safer Communities

During the summer, ERAC Operations staff met with FESTI to discuss expanding our ability to reach first responders.

Training & Events

Regionals are well underway for 2019. We’re into the fall peak season for training and looking forward to working with and training the remainder of the ERAC teams.

EOS (ERAP Online Services) Update

We encourage all ERAC Plan Participant members to add ERAC as a delegated ERAP writer to Transport Canada’s ERAP online services (EOS).

By January 2021, two years after the release of EOS, all Plan Participants must update their ERAPs through EOS regardless if the approval period extends beyond that date.

ERAC Responder Training Curriculum: Available to External Stakeholders

Our ERAC Responder Training curriculum, launched in March, is based on NFPA training standards and is composed of five sections of training with 19 courses total. Topics covered include Critical Incident Stress Management, identifying dangerous goods and hazards, planning the response, grounding and bonding, and more.

Safety Bulletin: Flammable Liquids Sight Glass - Polymer Degradation

The use of chemicals such as a degreaser with alcohols caused severe etching and stress cracking on the sight glass, according to the manufacturer’s chemical resistance warnings.

Spotlight: Sutherland Excavating Ltd.

Almost 20 years ago, Sutherland Excavating Ltd. was formed with only four employees. Today, over 20 employees work together to provide services such as petroleum tank installation, oil spill response, contaminated site clean up, and heavy equipment services.
