I admit it, pronouncing my last name has been a life-long struggle for some. Not me, of course, but others have butchered what I grew up thinking was a simple name to spell and pronounce.
Two words, "row" and "ten" put together its Rowten. Simple, right? The grade school years were the worse particularly at the beginning of any new school year. Wait for it, wait for it, and yes,
sure enough, roll call gets to James Rowten, and of course I hear James Rotten! Uggh, all I could think about is here come the rotten egg jokes as I sheepishly acknowledge with a meek "here" as the teacher has already forged on with the Smith's. Ah to be Michael Smith!

Names are our identity, or calling card, or get out of jail free card. Get it right, and if you don't know, ask. Our names are everywhere - social media handles, email signatures, name tags, IDs, mail, and more. They're the greeting in an email, a text, a phone call, a hand shake. They have the importance of your status attached: Dr., Esq., Mrs., Mr., etc. Your name is tied to your identity (whether you like it or not), so the correct spelling and pronounciation of it by others  count.

There are countless times when my name is spelled incorrectly or mispronounced, and as much as I try to brush it off, it bothers me when people don't take the time to read what I have written and reply as such. In my opinion, it means that the person misspelling or mispronouncing my name doesn't care enough to get it correctly, and if they don't care about that, what makes me
think they'll care about anything else I have to say? I admit, these types of people cause me to feel a bit of resentment, because as a professional, I do my very best to pay attention to the way you want to be identified, and I expect others to reciprocate. Doesn't always happen and I get that, but show you care and ask.

To build a professional relationship and maintain a high sense of respect, I believe it is important to take note of how someone's name is spelled and pronounced. Look it up or better yet ask what is the correct pronunciation of your name and repeat it until you have it right. It's a respectful question and one no one should take offense too. It's a respect thing.

Sincerely,
James Rowten (JR)
