North County commuters have been waiting years for traffic congestion relief on the 78. And they may be waiting even longer as SANDAG is proposing to ditch the 78 expansion plans in favor of mass transit.
In 2004, 67% of voters approved a continuance of the 1/2 cent Transnet sales tax for an additional 40 years. The ballot measure included language for expansion projects along the 52, 67 and 78. However, SANDAG's bold vision for the region will eliminate the expansion projects in order to invest in mass transit and technology. The idea is to wean people from their personal vehicles by providing an extensive commuter network, including bus, rail and last-mile van options.
The conceptual plan that SANDAG released on April 26 would essentially replace the agency's 2019-2050 Regional Plan which was scheduled to go into effect later this year. The official plan is still in the works, which SANDAG expects to release later this year.
Regardless of your mode of transportation, GETTING THERE in a reasonable amount of time is of most importance. SANDAG will be knee deep in opposition if they fail to keep the promises made in 2004.

SDCWA hosts "San Diego Grown Photo Contest" during month of May
As one of the nation's top producers of avocados, ornamental trees and shrubs, flowers, succulents, lemons, and other agricultural goods, San Diego County's farms generate nearly $4.8 billion in total economic activity.
Our region's temperate climate and reliable water supplies support an astounding 5,500 local farms on more than 250,000 cultivated acres - not to mention the numerous farmers markets, restaurants and grocery stores stocked with our local bounty.
To celebrate how safe and reliable water supplies fuel San Diego's thriving agriculture industry, the San Diego County Water Authority is hosting a photo contest in May, which is also Water Awareness Month.
