ESI TIP OF THE MONTH
Footing is essential. Your horse's health and performance ability depend on quality footing. Footing is to the horse as the shoe is to the athlete. Without the appropriate footing to give the necessary traction and cushion, your horse's health and performance ability will deteriorate. Proper footing is imperative in the training and performance of hunters, jumpers and dressage horses. The key difference is the depth and ratio of ingredients found in the top layer. Some sports need more cushion from their footing. Some need more traction. Others need more bounce. ARENA MAINTENANCE EDUCATION
Signs that Maintenance is Needed
- Footing has shifted to reflect traffic patterns
- Footing is dry and dusty
- Arena Foundation is uneven
- A trench is forming along the track
- It is hard to see through the dust
- Wet or slippery spots become chronic
- Stones or dirt clods are appearing in footing
- Pothole or gopher holes are appearing.
If you have any of these signs: Call Equestrian Services International today for a free consultation.

ESI Just Completed the New World Dressage Complex
Preceding the beginning of the circuit, Equestrian Services International did a great deal of maintenance on the footing throughout the facility. We added more footing to the International Arena to make sure that the arena was in peak shape for the 2012 competition. We also completely resurfaced the International Schooling Ring.
ESI removed all of the existing footing and installed a brand new surface. The Rost Arena and Rost Schooling area also got redone this year with improved drainage systems and all new footing.
The most critical thing for the arenas is ring maintenance. Our staff at ESI worked on the arenas, they maintained the World Dressage Arenas, barns and surrounding areas.
Each week we were doing maintenance on the arenas before, during and after the Dressage Competitions to provide the highest level of expectation for the riders and horses .
ESP is a world-class facility with so many amazing riders and horses. It is Equestrian Services International's priority to keep the arenas in top riding form.

Equestrian Services International the Official Footing Provider for the Ox Ridge Horse Show
Equestrian Services International the Official Footing Provider for the Devon Horse Show will do for 2012 the complete reconstruction of the schooling area.
| | Devon Horse Show Installation Pictures |
The most significant improvement at Devon for 2012 is the complete reconstruction of the schooling area. The third and final riding surface to be redone has been, by far, the largest of the three projects. For the third year in a row, Equestrian Services International was engaged to provide the all-weather footing. This year, however, the project went much deeper, literally, than installing a new surface. The entire schooling area was excavated to install a new water mitigation system. Brett Raflowitz, the founder and president of ESI, broke it down by the numbers: the schooling area at Devon is 135' by 250', that's roughly the size of a football field. Massive earth moving machines dug up mountains of soil and then installed almost a mile of drainage pipe which is set into 3,500 tons of drainage rock. That's 700,000 pounds, the equivalent of 42 elephants. The drainage system in, the schooling area was then back filled and a level surface was created.
In addition to all of the work in the schooling area, the drainage of the Dixon Oval was further improved by increasing the drainage basin that collects run off from high northwest corner of the property. A system of sub-surface piping was installed to drive water into the water mitigation system below the schooling area.
Once the Equestrian Services International footing is installed, the schooling area will be re-landscaped. The new schooling area will not only be more safe, functional and aesthetically pleasing, it will also be slightly larger and allow for additional schooling time for the different disciplines.

"I have been in the horse show business for 23 years and the footing business for 15. This is a family business and we are passionate about what we like. I ride, my daughter rides. We love the sport. That is how we got started. It is a family affair."
