Hi there!
It's glorious here right now - the days are warm and the trees and plants are starting to bud out, my daffodils are blooming, and my native plants have new growth. I've already spent time working the soil of my vegetable garden, and I've planted some cool-weather plants outside.
And, I feel so guilty - it shouldn't be this warm and dry at the end of February. While we are hoping for another "Miracle March" that would bring snow and precipitation to the region, folks are pretty worried about the lack of snowpack that provides an estimated 60% of California's water.
As the weather warms, our Round Valley mule deer herd will soon start their biannual journey from the valley floor to the higher elevations, through the narrow one-mile-wide migration corridor. Perhaps you can join us on Saturday, March 7th for our annual Mule Deer Migration Corridor Field Trip to hear the latest from Tim Taylor! He's an Environmental Scientist and mule deer expert with California Department of Fish and Wildlife, and he always shares fascinating updates and stories about our local deer.
And that field trip is only the beginning. We've got a full lineup of new and familiar events this spring - our Pollinator Garden Workshop, GardenFest, an Earth Day Mixer, our new concert series "In Harmony," and the list goes on! We have another exciting new event in Mammoth on April 1st, a local food and drink tasting experience called "A Taste of the Land" hosted by us and Ruth and Roger MacFarlane at Bleu Handcrafted Foods. Make sure to check out our calendar, and hopefully you can join us all throughout the season.
Meanwhile, I hope the winter season lasts a little longer. Please do a rain dance or wash your car... maybe we can get some much-needed snow and rain!

"You would think that keeping a third grader in one spot completely silent would be a near impossible task, but it isn't." Marie, ESLT's Education Coordinator and AmeriCorps Member, writes about the magical effect of nature on her students. Each month, she teaches with a program called "Taking Root," at the Bishop Paiute Tribe's Conservation Open Space Area.

Not once but twice every year, our local Round Valley mule deer herd embark on a risky journey. Did you know that ESLT was founded to protect their narrow migration pathway?

"Each time I've volunteered, I've gained another good memory or learned more about someone I've only slightly known before - whether while picking up trash on our Adopt-a-Highway section on Highway 395, or setting up a stage and lights for an amazing outdoor concert fundraiser." Marty is a fun and dedicated ESLT volunteer - thank you, Marty!
