BREAKING NEWS: MI Legislature Approves Changes to ESTA and Minimum Wage

Last night the Michigan Legislature approved amendment bills for both the Earned Sick Time Act and minimum wage. The bills are expected to be signed by the Governor with immediate effect. The Michigan Chamber has created an overview of some of the key changes, which can be viewed HERE, and will be hosting a webinar on Monday, 2/24 from 12-1pm to talk through these changes (register HERE).

CORRECTION/CLARIFICATION:

MI Legislature Approves Changes to ESTA and Minimum Wage


In the original version of ESTA, "nonprofit agencies" were specifically included in the list of covered employers, but that language was struck from the amended bill – which led to the MI Chamber’s initial interpretation that nonprofits were now exempted from compliance. This is the message that was shared this morning. However, in reading the amended definition of covered employers, Jodi Schaffer from HRM Services didn’t see that nonprofits were clearly exempted and in rereading it, neither does the MI Chamber.
