Math Strategies
 
What role should manipulatives play in the Classroom?

 

Students learn in many different ways.  When manipulatives are used students can touch and move objects to make visual representations of mathematical concepts.  In addition to meeting the needs of students who learn best in this way, manipulatives afford the teacher new ways of visiting a concept.
  
However, a good lesson on any mathematical topic should involve multiple instructional methods.  Using several different instructional techniques increases the possibility that all students will develop mathematical understanding through at least one method.  Teachers should combine:
  
1) the use of manipulatives
2) pencil/paper
3) technology
  
Different presentations of the same problem will help student learn from their experiences and connect the mathematics to those experiences. This foundation helps them to understand and appreciate mathematics!
