Ebenezer United Church of Christ
Pastor’s Corner

A few years ago I began searching for three teachers who made a large impact upon my life. I had decided that when I found them I would share specifically what they had done to leave such a lasting imprint upon me and how they had changed my life. The three teachers were Allen Marcus (high school math), Randy VerStrat (9th grade history), and John VerHeek (8th grade English).

Google, Facebook, and the courage to call all the A. Marcus’ in the phonebook and not being too embarassed at getting the wrong number were the tools I used to locate these teachers. The first teacher I found was Allen Marcus...I found his widow. I spoke with her the previous winter, just before Christmas. We talked for quite awhile and finished by saying that when I came to Michigan in May for a wedding I would call her.

Randy VerStrat was easy to locate since my brother had stayed in touch with him throughout the years. To my delight I discovered that my brother had invited him to the wedding.

John VerHeek was more difficult. Google searches produced just two people with that name in Michigan. One person was far too young and the other was no longer a teacher, but he was the right age.

I found all three teachers over Mother’s Day weekend. I was in Michigan to officiate at my neice’s wedding. I met with Barbara Marcus. I met Randy VerStrat at the wedding. I found John VerHeek via Facebook. I shared with each of them what they had meant to me. All of us were moved to tears as I thanked them for what they had done for me and what they taught me.

God brings many people into our lives. We need to keep our eyes, ears, hearts, and minds open so we may understand what is happening, what God is preparing us to do either right now or later in life. Perhaps these people understand what God is doing, maybe they don’t know, they are just doing their “job.”

During the summer spend some time remembering the people that have influenced your life. Contact them and tell them what they have meant to you and your life. Share God’s goodness and blessings.

Peace and grace,

Notes from the Music Corner ...
It is good to be able to again sing praises to God during the worship service. During July a sing-along of favorite hymns will be offered 10-15 minutes before worship (8:30). Even if you do not wish to sing, you can enjoy the familiar music and words.  To date we have not had many suggestions so we’ll use lists from prior years. You still are welcome to let me know what you’d like to sing – either drop a note in the offering plate or tell me directly.

The sing-along might stimulate some interest in the chancel choir the council would like to organize. If you have an interest in either directing or singing in a choir please speak to a council member or Pastor Mike.

We are looking forward to the Sharon Bethel Quartet participate in worship on August 22. More details in the August Eagle.

The Ice Cream Social Supper is scheduled for Wednesday, July 14, from 4:00 - 6:30 p.m. in the Fellowship Hall. PLEASE NOTE: There will be no sit down seating again this year - only carry-outs. Social distancing will be in place that day.
You can stop in July 14 and place your order then or you can call Joan (920-418-5457) or Ruth (920-849-9427) by July 12 for curbside pickup. There will be two parking spots designated for curbside pickup along the north wall closest to the Fellowship Hall doors. Someone will greet you and get your order. Menu includes: Johnsonville brats, hamburgers, German potato salad, coleslaw, beans, homemade pies, and ice cream (Dixie cups).

If you wish to make a donation to the Ice Cream Social Supper, please make checks payable to: Ebenezer Women’s Guild. Donations can be sent or dropped off at the church office, or be given to any Guild officer: Joan Woelfel, Ruth Aebischer, or Edith Knoespel.

Pie Bakers --The Fellowship Hall doors will be open by 6:00 a.m. on July 14 if you want to drop your pies off before you go to work. We ask that everyone please try to get their pies to church by noon. It’s also very important that we know how many pies we will be getting so if you haven’t returned your post card yet, please do so by July 2

The Women’s Guild would like to thank everyone who helps on July 14, bakes a pie(s), or donates cash. It is very much appreciated!

Any questions about the Ice Cream Social Supper, please contact Joan or Ruth.

Thank you for your support!

Join the Ushering Team!

We could use a few more volunteers to help with the ushering duties. Scheduling should not be more than every six or eight weeks. Obviously the more help we get, the less often you would be scheduled. Please give Shirley Lisowe (920) 418-1675 a call if you would be willing to help out!
Wednesday Nights at the Parsonage

Looking for a summer night with friends around a bonfire? If you answered “Yes” then set aside July 21 and August 18. We’ll begin at 6:30 p.m. and have a bonfire going when you arrive. Please bring your chairs, drinks, and any settings that you need if you wish to cook any food. We’ll provide bug spray, warm temperatures, and gentle breezes. Pastor’s Mike and Sue are looking forward to hosting all of you for conversation, a short Bible study and lots of fun.
Adult Bible Study

Our Adult Bible Study is held every Tuesday morning at 10:00 a.m. in the lounge. We are discussing The Wired Word. The topic for discussion will be emailed to those interested and paper copies will be available in the Narthex.

This class is open to everyone regardless of biblical knowledge and background. Please bring a Bible. If you do not have one or forget your Bible, we have plenty to share.

We look forward to seeing you in the class and having fun talking about the weekly topics.
THANK YOU Many thanks are due to Ralph Schmid and Adam & Vern Gasch. They recently placed 19 flower pots around Chilton. Your efforts are noticed every year by countless people in the community.

Flowers were provided by Brilliont Blooms.
