PODCAST SERIES: LET'S TALK ABOUT THE "NEXT NORMAL" OF EUROPEAN HIGHER EDUCATION!
|
In a world of constant change, the pandemic has shown us how institutions of higher education can use the potentials of digitization in order to create a better future of higher education – but students, being experts of their own learning experience, should play a crucial role in this discussion.
With the podcast series “NextNormal – WeStudy@Home”, students from all over Europe have the chance to share their experiences, hopes and wishes for their present and future student life. Each episode is dedicated to one European country. So far, students from ten European countries such as Italy, Slovenia and Finland have been invited to talk about the future of higher education beyond Corona.
“NextNormal – WeStudy@Home” is a podcast series produced by the NextEducation research group around EURASHE Vice-President Prof. Dr. Ulf-Daniel Ehlers at DHBW Karlsruhe and strongly supported by ESU, the European Students’ Union. The podcast is available on all important platforms.

PROJECT ON INCLUSIVE STUDENTS ENGAGEMENT IN PHE KICKS OFF ITS ACTIVITIES
|
Last February, EURASHE and partners celebrated the launch of the Inclusive Engagement of Non-Traditional Students in Professional Higher Education (InclusiPHE) project.
If a Professional Higher Education Institution (PHEI) wants to be truly inclusive for its diverse range of students, it should not only consider its study programmes and processes of teaching & learning, but also aim for fully inclusive students’ engagement. This relates to student activism, student involvement in decision-making bodies but also to student organisations themselves.
The InclusiPHE project aims to improve this situation and support PHEIs and their students’ organisations with concrete ideas, tools and guidance on how to make students’ engagement fully inclusive.
EURASHE is partner of the InclusiPHE project, which is funded by ERASMUS+ Programme.

TWO OPPORTUNITIES PHE INSITUTIONS CANNOT MISS
|
by Iskren Kirilov, Director for International affairs of Foundation Saint Paul CEU Andalusia
|
In 2021 Professional Higher Education (PHE) institutions are going to have the chance to benefit from an exceptional amount of European funds, while helping to shape the future of Europe in the framework of the forthcoming homonymous Conference.
The history of Europe exemplifies how crises catalyse changes and move ahead the integration process. The financial crisis of 2008 was instrumental to strengthen the European economic governance with the creation of the European semester. The current COVID-19 pandemic with the resulting devasting social and economic effects will not be an exception. In fact, it has already led to unpreceded, historical decisions, namely, the agreement on a robust EU-budget, coupled with an extraordinary Recovery plan – the Next Generation EU, that amounts for more than 1800 billion € for the period 2021-2027.
[...] With this in mind, PHE institutions become decisive stakeholders, as they present a set of important advantages in comparison with other educational institutions, namely, their strong regional engagement and knowledge of the specific needs and strengths of each region, and their capacity to interact with a wide range of stakeholders, especially SMEs, and to inspire and steer challenges-driven local and regional development. PHE institutions are called to do much and better than in the past, as the current circumstances are exceptional.

RESEARCH & INNOVATION: MONTHLY HIGHLIGHTS
|
EUROPEAN COMMISSION ADOPTS NEW STRATEGIC PLAN OF HORIZON EUROPE
|
On 15 March, the European Commission adopted the first strategic plan for Horizon Europe, the new EU research and innovation programme.
The strategic plan is a novelty in Horizon Europe and sets the strategic orientations for the targeting of investments in the programme's first four years. It ensures that EU research and innovation actions contribute to EU priorities, including a climate-neutral and green Europe, a Europe fit for the digital age, and an economy that works for people.
The priorities set out in Horizon Europe's strategic plan will be implemented through the Horizon Europe work programme. It sets out funding opportunities for research and innovation activities through thematic calls for proposals and topics. The first calls for proposals will be launched in the spring of 2021 and will be presented at the European Research and Innovation Days on 23-24 June.
