UAS REPRESENTATIVES AND STAKEHOLDERS MET TO DISCUSS THE OPPORTUNITIES OF THE SECOND EUROPEAN UNIVERSITIES INITIATIVE'S CALL

11 October 2019 - EURASHE's workshop "European Universities Initiative and Universities of Applied Sciences: reflections for future success"
took place at the Permanent Representation of Lithuania to the EU in Brussels, Belgium.
The event gathered more than fifty participants to discuss, together with representatives from the European Commission, the opportunities and challenges for Universities of Applied Sciences in a view of the second European Universities’ call.

LEADERS OF UNIVERSITIES OF APPLIED SCIENCES (UAS) DISCUSSED "CIVIC AND DEMOCRATIC VALUES AND COMPETENCES IN DISRUPTIVE TIMES"
|
10 October 2019
– The 6
th
UAS Leadership Forum took place in Brussels, gathering together leaders of Professional Higher Education institutions to discuss the role and challenges for UAS in promotion of civic and democratic values and social inclusion.
Special attention was paid to the institutional capacities and constraints, the specific competencies needed for the teachers and the personnel of the universities, the necessary adaptations of the curricula in the light of the Council of Europe’s Reference Framework of Competences for Democratic Culture, and the students’ engagement in various aspects of governance of professional higher education.

DR. NIJOLĖ ZINKEVIČIENĖ APPOINTED AS A NEW EURASHE BOARD MEMBER
|
On 10 October 2019, General Assembly members elected Dr. Nijolė Zinkevičienė, Vice Rector for Research and Partnerships at Vilniaus kolegija /University of Applied Sciences, as a new EURASHE Board member.
Dr. Zinkevičienė has been an active member of the professional higher education sector and EURASHE activities. Within the organisation she is a member of EURASHE Research and Innovation working group and other international networks.
EURASHE Board is an executive body of the organisation and consists of the President, Vice Presidents and six Board members.

PROFESSIONAL HIGHER EDUCATION COMMUNITY DISCUSSED ON HOW TO ENHANCE WORK-BASED LEARNING AND ENTREPRENEURSHIP IN HIGHER EDUCATION
|
The goal of the workshop was to share and discuss key issues related to further development and support of work-based learning and development of entrepreneurial competences within higher education – the concept, role of various stakeholders, key principles, role of leaders, active role of students and world of work.
The event gathered around 45 participants representing higher education, businesses sectors and students.

EURASHE PEER LEARNING ACTIVITY ON SHORT CYCLE HIGHER EDUCATION TOOK PLACE IN PORTO
|
|
The two-day event gathered together 60 participants from Portugal and around Europe to discuss the mission, role and objectives of SCHE, also focusing on Quality Assurance aspects and the cooperation with the world of work.

PRACTITIONERS AND LEADERS FROM PHE INSTITUTIONS DISCUSSED QUALITY CULTURE AND ROLE OF LEADERSHIP

12 September 2019 – The second EURASHE Quality Assurance Community of Practice on the development of quality culture, the role of leadership and people engagement took place in The Hague, The Netherlands.

, the event gathered together 30 participants from around the Europe, who had the opportunity to discuss and exchange ideas and experiences with relations to the proposed themes of “People and Culture” and “Processes and Tools needed for Quality Culture”.

EURASHE JOINED FEANI ENGINEERS EUROPE ADVISORY GROUP
|
|
On 11 September 2019, EURASHE took part in the celebration of the Engineers Europe Advisory Group’s first anniversary “The future engineer: wishes and facts” organized by the European Federation of National Engineering Associations (FEANI) at the European Economic and Social Committee in Brussels, Belgium.
During the event, our Policy Advisor Iskren Kirilov joined the debate, addressing EURASHE’s position and views with the speech "Professional Higher Education of tomorrow: new skills for a new society". The debate was then followed by the signature of the Letter of Intent, with which EURASHE became a part of the Engineers Europe Advisory Group.

EUROPEAN UNIVERSITIES INITIATIVE CONFERENCE IN NOVEMBER

The European Commission is organising the kick-off event of the European Universities Initiative “Building the universities of the future” on 7 November 2019 at

, Glass Entrance, Mont des Arts, 1000 Brussel, Belgium.
The Conference will present the transformational potential of the European Universities Initiative and provide an open forum for discussions about the universities of the future. Participants will hear the selected European Universities present their strategies, be informed about the second call for proposals for new pilot European Universities and be able to share their thoughts about the future of the initiative.

EURASHE and its
RPLiP project
partners invite you and your relevant colleagues from higher education institutions to participate in the survey and share your views and experience on Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) policies, approaches and challenges of individual higher education institutions. The focus is on recognition of non-formal and informal prior learning.

The RPLiP project aims to promote different ways of recognising competences for access to further studies and for credits. The objective is to encourage, through structured peer learning, the participating countries to develop quality assured and consistent processes/working methods to recognise non-formal and informal learning.
The project intends to feed into further European discussion on enhanced flexibility of higher education provisions.

NEWS FROM THE DEQAR PROJECT
|
EURASHE is a part of the Database of External Quality Assurance Results (DEQAR) project which aims to collect all external quality assurance reports and decisions performed by QA agencies in line with the ESG in order to improve access to information and facilitate the recognition of qualification.
On 7-8 October 2019, EURASHE took part in the DEQAR project final conference in Madrid, where Secretary General Michal Karpíšek spoke in the panel “Translating the ESG into practice – analysing evidence from quality assurance reports in DEQAR”.
Recently, the project has launched an improved public user interface, offering a range of drill-down filter and a direct search by quality assurance report and by institution, and a new engaging video to promote their work throughout Europe.

WANT TO IMPROVE YOUR TEACHING? START WITH THE BASICS: LEARN STUDENTS’ NAMES
|
Do you think that professors should invest time in learning students' names?
Students in the survey acknowledged that learning all of their names is very hard to do in a large class. But they said it was alienating when a professor could not call them by name even in small-sized classes, or did not seem to recognize them outside of class. As one student wrote: "One of my professors learned everyone’s name in the first week and it made me feel really important and that she cared about me”.
