Royal Academy
Summer Exhibition 2025
17 June - 17 August 2025
£££ Kissi Penny $$$ : Bonds by EVEWRIGHT
In these works, EVEWRIGHT subverts notions of worth and value imposed by the transatlantic slave trade and colonial subjugation. £££ Kissi Pennies $$$, 2023, is a series of sculptures and a conceptual currency whose title originates from the Kissi Penny, a West African currency which took the form of a thin iron bar flattened on one end with spiked splayed-out prongs on the other.
£££ Kissi Pennies $$$ were historically traded among the Gbandi, Kissi and Mandinka peoples, among others situated around the West African Atlantic coast. Alongside this status, Kissi Pennies were also used to adorn burial sites and thus gained religious connotations.
EVEWRIGHT’s £££ Kissi Pennies $$$ records the heritage of generations past, using everyday objects such as the afro comb and Dutch antique ornaments to create sculptures reminiscent of the Benin Bronzes (synonymous with contemporary Black pride and identity) and evocative of Africa’s indigenous wealth. Highlighted as one in seven artworks to see at this year's Royal Academy Summer Exhibition, these artwork works in symphony with this year's theme of art’s capacity to forge dialogues by Farshid Moussavi RA. Topics such as repatriation of African artefact to their homelands as well as financial reparations to the ancestors and descendants of slaves to the diaspora will raise discussions.
These sculptures or, as the artist calls them, 'coins' confront the notion of currency, and worth in relation to the value of human life and modern-day migration. As each £££ Kissi Penny $$$ artwork is sold, a fresh financial transaction takes place, releasing ‘THE COINS WITH SOUL’, an ancestor to be set free with hope by the artist.

Museum Greenwich
1st July - 1st November 2025
OCEAN JUSTICE
Evewright Arts is delighted to lead a five-month residency at the National Maritime Museum exploring the theme of Ocean Justice with a focus on new research, development, shaping dynamic and engaging visitor experiences.
The residency will be an exciting opportunity to research the Royal Museums
Greenwich collection and archive to inspire and explore new ideas, practice, create new dialogue and interpretations.
Artist EVEWRIGHT and Ionie Richards will both be able to develop their individual practice. EVEWRIGHT, who uses art and a multidisciplinary approach, and Ionie Richards, exploring writing and research, will begin their new residency at The Studio from July to November.
"The unveiling of the reimagined Ocean Court marks an exciting artistic and intellectual chapter within the museum's ongoing story. For us, the powerful concept of Ocean Justice serves as a profound wellspring for our individual creative explorations, each delving into the intricate and often turbulent relationship between humanity and the vast ocean. This pivotal moment will deeply inform our artistic inquiries into the world around us, with the ever-present narrative of migration at its heart. We bring our distinct histories and perspectives to this space, eager to contribute to a vibrant public dialogue that considers our shared past, navigates our present, and shapes our collective future."

CONDOLENCES
Tina Aparicio RIP
100 Beautiful Years
(31 Jan 1925 - 18 Apr 2025)
| | |
It is with profound sadness that Evewright Arts announces the passing of Tina Aparicio, a treasured Windrush elder who lived an incredible 100 years of dedicated service. A true Windrush Pioneer, Tina arrived in England in 1958 to pursue her calling as a nurse and midwife.
Tina became a beloved figure in the National Health Service, notably as one of the first Black midwives in Thurrock, Essex, in the 1960s. Tina's career was a testament to selfless care, as she lovingly delivered over 2,000 babies, earning the deep respect and affection of her community.
We were deeply honoured to meet her first in 2018, when she shared her vital story for our audio collection, and throughout the years since. Tina's powerful testimony perfectly embodies our mission to preserve the invaluable contributions of the Windrush Generation. Her life is commemorated in our audio archives online, at Essex Record Office and within the Tilbury Bridge Walkway of Memories art installation.
Her profound dedication to midwifery was justly recognised last year when we nominated her for Thurrock Council’s Roll of Honour. Tina's life touched so many, leaving an indelible mark.
Our heartfelt sympathy goes out to her son, John, daughter, Gloria, and their entire family. Tina's remarkable legacy will forever be remembered.
