MENTAL HEALTH WORKSHOP FOR YOUNG WOMEN

In collaboration with the Office of Mayor Karen Bass’s and the Los Angeles County Department of Mental Health, the Southeast YouthSource Center (YSC) recently hosted a workshop on depression for young ladies in the community. The event was held in Watts on Friday April 14, 2023, as part of what the YSC hopes will be an ongoing series. Nine female youth participants and YSC staff participated in the workshop.

Mental Health Coordinator Lois Herndon led a two-hour presentation that touched on the symptoms of depression, including: how to detect if someone is going through a depressive state, the differences between sadness and depression, the ranges of mental health disorders, and the contrast between men and women when it comes to how they manage their depression and suicide.

When asked about why it’s important to educate young women about mental health, Herndon said, “It’s important to educate young women about this topic because it brings awareness and helps break the stigma around mental health.”

A PODCAST WITH TIPS FOR JOB SEEKERS

EWDD General Manager Carolyn Hull was recently the featured guest of the Future of Work, a podcast hosted by Pasadena Community College that explores how to close the gap between what students are learning and the demands of the workforce.

Titled How to Become A Lifelong Learner in an Ever Changing Industry,” Ms. Hull’s episode covered how EWDD is prioritizing expanding youth employment programs and supporting training programs in growth industry sectors. She also emphasized the importance of adopting a mentality of lifelong learning in order for workers to continue to have relevant skills in the workplace.

“Those days of getting that degree and working at one company for the next 20, 30 years is probably not the future. And what is important is that we all upskill at various points, and as a result, we need to support the ability to utilize the latest technology, like AI.”

She added, “We really want our private sector partners to understand that we want to provide people with living wage jobs and we want to give people an opportunity to succeed. Maybe they didn't go to the fanciest schools, but they've had life experience. And to really look at life experience and to give credit for that so we can move people into these middle skill jobs.”

BAR IN A BOX POURS INTO NEW STOREFRONT

The Hollywood BusinessSource Center recently assisted wife and husband team Keren and Jeffery Muller, owners of Bespoke Bar L.A. in securing additional funding for their new storefront. Bespoke Bar L.A. is a “Bar in a Box,” cocktail company where customers can have a curated box of alcoholic beverages filled with a blend of spirits, wines, and beer delivered right to their door.

The business owners met with Hollywood BSC business consultant Diana Chung to find and build a relationship with the right lender. Diana guided them on the essential prerequisites for loans and fundamentals to access capital. After meeting with Diana, the pair received funding.

Today they continue to work with Diana to build a strong brand and grow sales through various marketing channels. The couple is excited to continue their entrepreneurial journey and grateful they can grow their business by accessing the many resources that the Hollywood BusinessSource Center Team has to offer.

Bespoke Bar L.A. is located in LA City Council District 10 at 2677 S La Cienega Blvd.
