LA:RISE Youth Academy Inspires Hope in Former Foster Care Student

Doing a balancing act between working and attending school is already difficult and can be impossible when also facing housing insecurity. This was the situation that Ebony Mckinney found herself facing as she began aging out of the foster care system.

Mckinney learned about the LA:RISE Youth Academy through the UCLA Youthsource Center and joined with aspirations to gain work experience and make the most of the support services. At the time, Mckinney worked at the Central City Neighborhood Partners (CCNP) as an intern helping sort and package food for the weekly food distributions. During her employment, Mckinney enrolled in the GEM Academy at CCNP in hopes of obtaining a high school diploma while working, as she expressed, “going to school at the same location has truly made her feel like her goals [are] attainable.”

Mckinney reflected upon the time spent at GEM Academy preparing for the future, stating, "It's never too late to start!" Mckinney aspires to graduate high school and attend college to major in Nursing or Child Development.

PACE BusinessSource Center Helps Japanese-American

Restaurant Reopen

Like many other restaurants in the City of Los Angeles, Tomoko Morishita, owner of the Japanese-American restaurant Eigikutei (栄菊亭), faced a substantial decrease in revenue during the pandemic. Morishita turned to EWDD’s Hollywood BusinessSource Center (BSC) for assistance in obtaining access to capital to keep her business afloat.

Due to public health restrictions during the pandemic, Eigikutei (栄菊亭) (Formerly known as Nirvana) was forced to shut down for 5 months and later only allowed to provide to-go orders along with offering limited outdoor seating to customers. Customers enjoyed eating sushi and sashimi on-site, but due to the restriction mandates this no longer was an option and caused revenue to fall by 80% during the final months of 2020.

Embracing the unprecedented crisis, Morishita took the opportunity to revamp the business operations by submitting her tenant improvement project plan to the City of Los Angeles’ Planning Department. She shut down the restaurant in December 2020 to put her plan in motion. The restaurant was expected to re-open by mid-December 2021 before major holidays; however, the process had been delayed significantly. With the help of the Hollywood BSC, the improvement permit was finally issued in September 2022 after experiencing a 12-month delay. During the process, the Hollywood BSC granted the restaurant a $250K disaster loan that was used to pay for rent and tenant improvements.

Without the loan, Morishita may have needed to shut down the restaurant for a longer period or reduce the number of employees all while unable to generate sales.

Now, Eigikutei has reopened and offers customers an all-new dining experience. The restaurant focuses on serving Nabe Kaiseki (Japanese Hotpot – cooking meats and vegetables in hot broth) and Sushi Kaiseki. Kaiseki is a traditional multi-course Japanese meal with different price points to fit all budgets.

Eigikutei is located in Council District 14.

YO! Watts YouthSource Center’s Youth Council Volunteer at Winter Wonderland Event

On December 8, 2023, in partnership with Council District 15, students of the YO! Watts YouthSource Center (YSC) volunteered in the Watts community to make the annual Winter Wonderland event a success. The YSC’s Youth Council was asked by Councilmember Tim McOsker’s Office to participate and help serve the Watts community as Community Ambassadors.

The Youth Council assisted in a multitude of ways:

  • Helped children ride sleds down the snow mounds that were brought to Watts for this event (Yes, there was snow in Southeast Los Angeles!)
  • Supervised youth playing in the bouncers to ensure their safety
  • Assisted youth with painting their Christmas hats with decorations and colors
  • Helped organize and give out toys to youth at Ted Watkins Park
  • Engaged community members to inform them about all of the great services of the YO! Watts YouthSource Center has to offer

The Youth Council looks forward to continuous volunteer work in Watts and beyond.
