2024 Connecticut Youth

Employment Program

EWIB coordinated its amazing youth partners (EASTCONNThames Valley Council for Community Action (TVCCA), New London Youth Affairs, & Norwich Youth, Family & Recreation Division) to deliver another successful Summer Youth Employment Program (SYEP) across Eastern CT. ~635 youth enrolled and counting received paid work experience at ~135 worksites across the region, as well as career planning and exploration, resume and interviewing support, and work readiness training. SYEPs represent a proven strategy to help at-risk and disconnected youth reduce criminal justice system involvement, develop academic and career aspirations, and build work habits and social-emotional skills.

EWIB President/CEO Michael Nogelo will talk about summer youth employment programs, high school career pathway programs, and other strategies to get at-risk and disconnected youth back on track as a panelist at a regional meeting of the CT Conference of Municipalities’ 119K Commission focused on workforce on Tuesday, August 27 at 5:30 p.m. at New London City Hall at 181 State Street in New London.

On Wednesday, August 21, EASTCONN will host a 119K Commission regional meeting focused on the unique challenges facing Opportunity Youth in rural areas at 5:30 p.m. at 376 Hartford Turnpike in Hampton. Stakeholders and community members are encouraged to attend these meetings and/or submit written testimony – visit the 119K Commission News/Events page to RSVP!

Eastern CT Second Chance Employment Partnership Connects Justice-Affected Workers to Manufacturing Careers

On July 26, the Eastern CT Workforce Investment Board (EWIB), CT NAACP State Conference, and Eastern Advanced Manufacturing Alliance Regional Sector Partnership (EAMA RSP) announced a partnership to prepare formerly incarcerated individuals and others whose involvement with the criminal justice system puts them at a disadvantage in the labor market for manufacturing jobs on pathways to family-sustaining careers. The partnership leverages EWIB’s national-award winning Manufacturing Pipeline Initiative, the CT NAACP One Million Jobs Campaign, and the collective needs of EAMA RSP employer members to increase equitable opportunity for justice-affected workers. Check out the press release.
