EXCITING MUSICAL NEWS
FROM MISIÓN PENIEL
Dreams really can come true...
It has been “in the works” for two years now and although the pandemic delayed its start, and certain adaptations have had to be made, we are pleased to announce the start of the Music Academy at Misión Peniel at the end of January! The director of this musical academy is Juan Pablo Oliva, a trained classical guitarist from Cárdenas, Cuba. The academy, under Juan Pablo’s direction, is designed to provide a comprehensive music program that includes private lessons, music theory and music appreciation studies for youth in Immokalee.
There are currently eight students enrolled in classes that are held each Tuesday afternoon at the mission. Juan Pablo works with a volunteer instructor from Bonita Springs. Joe has been a long time student of Juan Pablo and happy to help! As this academy grows, additional teachers will be sought. Juan Pablo will be planning a first recital for these students in the near future-- watch for the date!
We give thanks to those who have provided the initial seed money
to help make this dream become a reality:

One of the strengths of Misión Peniel is the way that it partners creatively with like-hearted organizations. This is quite evident with the work of Ellen Burnette, who joined the Misión Peniel leadership team this year.
Ellen comes to us after a fascinating 19 year term of service in Thailand with her husband Rick, where they focused on agricultural ministry. While serving there with the Cooperative Baptist Fellowship (CBF), they later worked with ECHO (based in Fort Myers) to establish their first international branch in Thailand – a group that provides resources and training in small-scale sustainable farming.
Upon their return to the US, recognizing that Immokalee, FL is essentially a food desert, in 2018 they she and Rick founded Cultivate Abundance, a logical extension of the work they have done throughout their lives. Primarily using land behind Misión Peniel they grow fresh produce that is a vital complement to the dry goods offered. Together with partner gardens, institutions and small farms, they provided 28,000 lbs of produce in 2020, and 42,000 lbs in 2021. We are so grateful for this incredible gift to hard-working people of Immokalee!
Ellen and Rick are members of Covenant Presbyterian Church in Fort Myers.
