Hello SPA/SCC Alumni and Friends,

I am pleased to present you with our second edition of the Alumni & Friends Newsletter.

The support we received and stories shared with us through our Summer 2023 Newsletter was overwhelming! I want to thank you for your continued support of Saratoga Central Catholic.

Great things are happening here at SCC. We're excited to share our school's ongoing success, including a 6% increase in enrollment! We're also celebrating a significant milestone in our athletic history, with our girls varsity golf team being the first in school history to earn a full team qualification for sectionals, marking a proud moment for one of the inaugural girls golf teams in Section 2, established in 2021.

But the heart of this newsletter is the incredible alumni community we have. We've been fortunate to reconnect with numerous alumni since our last newsletter, and we're proud to highlight three more remarkable individuals:

  • Eileen Venn '95
  • Andrew Valenza '16
  • Scott Cherry '89

We're also excited to share in this newsletter the many photos taken from the Class of 1973 50th Reunion, which was held last month!

We invite all alumni to share your news with us and ensure your contact information is up to date, so we can continue to keep you informed about the latest developments at your alma mater.

All of us at SCC wish you a safe and happy Thanksgiving! Your ongoing support and engagement mean the world to us.

Best wishes,

Aiden Lambert '21

Eileen Venn '91

Eileen Venn ‘91 has carved an impressive path since her graduation from Saratoga Central Catholic. After graduating from SUNY Albany with her bachelor’s degree, Eileen held a 13-year career in the beer industry as a brand and sales rep for The Boston Beer Company, DeCrescente Distributing and Diageo. Through these roles, she learned valuable skills in marketing, finance, and sales, and used these to achieve her goals of owning her own business.

In 2008, Eileen and her husband, Brian, purchased Mechanical Testing Inc. (MTI), which is where her father and husband worked previously. MTI is an HVAC niche service business which serves many medical, educational, manufacturing and commercial buildings, with clients such as GlobalFoundries, Camden Yards, City Park MLS Soccer Stadium, Cornell University’s Science Center, and several SUNY campuses. They currently complete 1,000 projects yearly, and that number is growing with new acquisitions in the Mid-Atlantic region this March. Eileen is also a proud member of the NAWIC (National Association of Women in Construction) promoting the trades as an option to many students, especially women, who may not think of the construction industry as a viable option for them.

Eileen is the mother of current SCC student, Grace, and Saratoga High student, Jillian. She states “one of my proudest personal achievements is my two daughters, Grace & Jillian. They have not only taught me patience but also how to be a better person.”

Andrew Valenza '16:

Andrew has authored a captivating sci-fi adventure titled Empire of the Void, paying tribute to the golden age of 1950s and 1960s science fiction films. His book has made waves, achieving a notable ranking in the top 10% of all self-published books, as recognized by wordsrated.com.

The novel's storyline introduces readers to Dex and Lacy Prullen, intrepid explorers from an alternate 1950s Earth, embarking on a mission into the uncharted universe, where they face off against a formidable galactic empire led by a god-like being.

Andrew is already busy working on additional projects, and those interested in staying updated can visit his website, Valenza Publishing.

Click here to find the book on Amazon! You can also find the book in Barnes & Noble (Saratoga), Northshire Bookstores, Beldame Books (Glens Falls), and anywhere you can buy books online.

Scott Cherry '89:

Scott Cherry continues to make waves in the world of basketball. Recently appointed as the Men's Basketball Assistant Coach at D-1 Central Michigan, Cherry brings an impressive resume of 26 seasons coaching at the collegiate level.

After graduation from SCC, Scott headed to the University of North Carolina, where he played under the legendary Coach Dean Smith. He captained the team during a significant triumph in 1993 when The Tar Heels secured the National Championship.

At SCC, Scott helped lead the team during his senior year to an outstanding 25-1 record. His contribution was notable, culminating in a total of 1,134 points scored during his three-year varsity basketball career.

Scott's coaching career also includes his nine-year tenure as head coach at High Point University, the team clinched multiple championships and made a mark in the NCAA and NIT tournaments. His coaching acumen was recognized with the title of Big South Coach of the Year in 2014. He also led High Point to their first-ever NCAA Division I postseason bid to the team's consecutive conference titles.

Before his coaching career took flight, Scott played professionally in Cyprus, following a standout collegiate career at North Carolina.

Class of 1973 50th Reunion Weekend:

The Class of 1973 celebrated their 50th reunion last month! The weekend started with a guided tour of the current school building, allowing the class to revisit old classrooms and witness school renovations.

The celebration continued at the Inn at Saratoga, where classmates reconnected and reminisced. SPA uniforms, yearbooks, and memorabilia were on display. Just by the photos, it is evident how close this class is!

We appreciate the continued support from the Class of 1973!

On October 4, we held a School-Wide Field Trip Day! Our junior and senior classes traveled to Salem, Massachusetts, the freshmen and sophomores went to the American Museum of Natural History in New York City, and the middle school students went to the MiSci Museum in Schenectady.

Students Honor Veterans

Another amazing tradition at SCC. Pictured is our Veterans Day Memorial in the main lobby.

Every year, students, faculty, and staff have the opportunity to honor a cherished veteran they know by writing their name on a star to be displayed in the lobby.

St. Clement's Visits SCC for the Day!

Our partnerships with our local Catholic elementary schools continue to flourish!

Our 5th grade friends from St. Clement's School were "Saints for a Day" this past October. They followed around the typical schedule of an SCC 6th grader and each student received their own Saints drawstring bag to take home!
