Natural (Re)Sources looks at the origin of the artist’s chosen materials. This doesn’t mean that the finished work looks as if it has just been collected from a forest floor, or dug from the ground without intervention, but rather that the material basis for the work is ‘of the earth’ in various forms.

All fourteen artist-makers excel in their fields; producing works that are a testament to using our Earth’s Natural (Re)Sources for the benefit of us, the people that come to view and appreciate their talents.

Laura will also be giving a talk on the Saturday at 11.30am and will last for about an hour. She will be talking about the work she has made for the exhibition, how and why she did the pieces. She promises lots of work in progress, photos and hopefully some video to show the process. She will also cover where the ideas have come from and how her sketchbooks and sampling has been used to arrive at the finished quilts.

THE FESTIVAL OF QUILTS

The Festival of Quilts was launched in 2003 in partnership with The Quilters’ Guild as a hub for people from all over the world to come together and share their passion for quilting.

20 years on and it is now the biggest quilting show in Europe with over 22,000 quilting fanatics expected to attend this year. It is also home to the largest open quilt competition in the world, has the largest programme of workshops and talks offered anywhere in Europe and hosts some of the leading quilt artists from around the globe.

This is what Amanda has had to say about this course

"This is a workshop where the outcomes most definitely develop depending on the individual student. You will be exploring and experimenting with both paper and cloth in many different weights and transferring qualities, making relationships and connections between the two, as well as blurring the boundary. Hand stitch and surface will be encouraged interpreting traditional techniques of eyelets, cutwork, couching, trapunto, quilting, Italian quilting and inlay. My collection of old textiles especially my collars will be inspiration for shape, edge weight and right side /wrong side. Paring down to a neutral palette will heighten the surface qualities and tactile senses opening your eyes to new ideas in colour when you return to your personal palette.
