Vancouver, Canada-based SunOpta Inc, a leading Canadian specialty, non-GMO and organic food manufacturer, announced late February it has divested its specialty and organic soy and corn business to Pipeline Foods, LLC ("Pipeline Foods") for C$66.5 million ($50.3m), the third divestment that SunOpta has made since 2017 when it sold its flexible re-sealable pouch products and nutrition bar operations.

With the  UK's Fairtrade Fortnight  kicking off from Monday 25 February until Sunday 10 March, the primary campaign for the UK Fairtrade movement also seeks to highlight challenges experienced by third-world farmers faced with poverty, child labor and deforestation, such as the exploitation of West African cocoa farmers.  
Mergers & Acquisitions

Canada hemp food pioneer and industry major  Manitoba Harvest  has been acquired by New York stock exchange-listed, Canada-based natural food company Tilray Inc  for up to C$419 million (US$319m) in a cash and share transaction. The acquisition by Tilray comes after Manitoba Harvest was acquired by Compass Group  in June 2015. Manitoba Harvest had sales of over C$40 million in 2014.

A report from credit ratings company Moody's  has warned that  French grocery retailers  are faced with threats to their market because of elevated "structural challenges," rising online gross sales and competition from retailers such as specialist meals providers, natural grocers, and discounters.


Whole Foods Market's   365  grocery chain will convert all of its existing twelve 365 stores into regular Whole Foods stores by the end of 2019, according to reports from Yahoo Finance and other U.S. sources. The announcement follows the decision to stop expanding the smaller format stores, made in an internal announcement in January.

Natural Products Expo West, the leading North American annual trade show in the natural, organic and healthy products sector is returning to the Anaheim Convention Center March 5-9 to celebrate its 38thedition. In 2018, the event hosted 3,521 exhibitors representing 132 countries and this year it expects to attract over 85,000 industry professionals to learn and share the latest trends and innovative products, and to discuss how to add value to"organic."


BIOFACH CHINA 2019 will celebrate its 13th edition in Hall 3 together with Natural Expo China at the Shanghai World Expo Exhibition & Convention Center on May 16-18. And at the same venue, PAK-ID debuts on May 16-17, along with the 3rd Craft Beer China on May 15-17.


BIOFACH - the world's largest trade fair for organic and sustainable food - which took place in Nuremberg February 13-16, set a new record with 2 989 exhibitors from 95 different countries. Also, Vivaness, the international event for natural and organic personal care,   saw 3 273 companies from 98 countries exhibited on its 30th edition - more than ever before!
 
The 2019 edition of Vivaness, the largest international natural and organic trade fair for beauty products ended on a high note. According to organizers NurembergMesse, 284 exhibitors from 41 regions gathered this year, and a total of 51,500 trade visitors attended the trade fair and its sister show BIOFACH.
