What's On Our Mind ...
Donald Trump, with Mitch McConnell’s aid, fulfilled his promise to load the Supreme Court with judges that want to overturn Roe v. Wade. After this week’s Supreme Court hearing, it became perfectly clear that the Court stands ready to fulfill its pledge to Trump.
Since the courts will give us no protection, our fate now lies with the Senate. Imagine if McConnell had control over women’s reproductive healthcare choices. That potentially dark, frightening world is only 340 days from becoming reality if we don’t get to work electing more pro-choice Democratic Senators. Extreme anti-choice candidates pose a danger to all of us.
A GOP candidate opposing Sen. Mark Kelly (D-AZ) has said that “abortion is one of the most awful and painful things that happen in our society.” (But he does not put gun violence in that category.)
In Georgia, Trump-tapped candidate Herschel Walker, running against Sen. Raphael Warnock (D-GA) doesn’t even support abortion in cases of rape or incest.
Former NV Attorney General Adam Laxalt who is running against Sen. Catherine Cortez Masto (D-NV) has a long history as attorney general of opposing reproductive freedom. He had his state join a Supreme Court case supporting fake clinics that discourage women from making their own healthcare decisions.
Many states will not protect women’s abortion rights, either. Half of all states are poised to ban abortion almost immediately if Roe is overturned. Many other states will move swiftly to enact sweeping restrictions on access to abortion services.
SCOTUS will hand down a decision by next June. But we can’t wait until then to take action. We must start now. The Senate needs to pass the Women’s Health Protection Act (S.1975). This legislation would prohibit state laws that ban abortions. Call your Senators and urge them to support this bill — 202-224-3121.
Then we must support JAC’s pro-choice Democrats. The Senate is the last line of defense against the GOP’s dangerous crusade to curb our reproductive rights.
Time is running out. If we lose our rights now, they will be lost for generations. The women of tomorrow are counting on us today.
