What's On Our Mind ...

Donald Trump, with Mitch McConnell’s aid, fulfilled his promise to load the Supreme Court with judges that want to overturn Roe v. Wade. After this week’s Supreme Court hearing, it became perfectly clear that the Court stands ready to fulfill its pledge to Trump.

Since the courts will give us no protection, our fate now lies with the Senate. Imagine if McConnell had control over women’s reproductive healthcare choices. That potentially dark, frightening world is only 340 days from becoming reality if we don’t get to work electing more pro-choice Democratic Senators. Extreme anti-choice candidates pose a danger to all of us.

A GOP candidate opposing Sen. Mark Kelly (D-AZ) has said that “abortion is one of the most awful and painful things that happen in our society.” (But he does not put gun violence in that category.)

In Georgia, Trump-tapped candidate Herschel Walker, running against Sen. Raphael Warnock (D-GA) doesn’t even support abortion in cases of rape or incest.

Former NV Attorney General Adam Laxalt who is running against Sen. Catherine Cortez Masto (D-NV) has a long history as attorney general of opposing reproductive freedom. He had his state join a Supreme Court case supporting fake clinics that discourage women from making their own healthcare decisions.

Many states will not protect women’s abortion rights, either. Half of all states are poised to ban abortion almost immediately if Roe is overturned. Many other states will move swiftly to enact sweeping restrictions on access to abortion services.

SCOTUS will hand down a decision by next June. But we can’t wait until then to take action. We must start now. The Senate needs to pass the Women’s Health Protection Act (S.1975). This legislation would prohibit state laws that ban abortions. Call your Senators and urge them to support this bill — 202-224-3121.

Then we must support JAC’s pro-choice Democrats. The Senate is the last line of defense against the GOP’s dangerous crusade to curb our reproductive rights.

Time is running out. If we lose our rights now, they will be lost for generations. The women of tomorrow are counting on us today.

ISRAEL

Israel urged world powers to halt nuclear talks with Iran immediately, citing evidence that Tehran has escalated uranium production. In an unlikely partnership, Lebanon will receive fuel from Israel as it faces an increasingly dire electricity crisis. The U.N. General Assembly approved a resolution that disavowed Jewish ties to the Temple Mount.

ANTISEMITISM AND BDS

‘Needle Nazis,’ ‘medical brown shirts,’ Mengele and Stars of David: how Nazi-coronavirus comparisons have proliferated on the right. Biden hosted the White House Hanukkiah lighting ceremony where he warned about the 'resurgence of this tide of antisemitism'. A German bank closed an account that financed Hamas after a journalistic investigation.

CHOICE

Many expected that the Supreme Court would unravel abortion rights. Oral arguments on a Mississippi case proved that. Healthcare providers told SCOTUS that the Mississippi abortion law would open the door to extensive bans across the country. 65 million women could lose abortion rights if SCOTUS overturns Roe v. Wade.

RELIGION AND STATE

A survey found that more Evangelicals are 'dismissive' of Israel than loyal to it and a third reject the idea of Judaism altogether. Justice Sonia Sotomayor warned that the Mississippi abortion case will put LGBTQ+ rights at risk. The religious right wants states’ tax dollars, and the Supreme Court is likely to agree.

BEYOND THE CORE

A prosecutor filed manslaughter charges against the parents of the suspect in a Michigan school shooting. Politicians and activists are struggling to overcome the desensitized public's response to mass shootings. Plagues and shipping shortages are byproducts of climate change.

POLITICAL BYTE

Democrats are poised to use the abortion case as fuel for 2022 voter turnout. As Congress keeps the government open, here is the rest of its to-do list to complete before the end of the year. ‘Not-so-secret weapon’: critics warn that Trump and the GOP are planning a 2024 Electoral College heist.

FYI

After two decades in the making, Gabby Giffords became a bat mitzvah. The White House celebrated its first Hanukkah with a Jewish spouse of the Vice President. Jewish rappers Nissim Black and Kosha Dillz remixed Adam Sandler’s ‘Chanukah song’ on the streets of New York.

The Last Word

"At its core, Hanukkah recounts a story at the heart of the human spirit – one that is inherently Jewish and undeniably American… It teaches us that even a little bit of light, wherever it is found, can dispel the darkness and illuminate a path forward."

President Joe Biden, in a statement marking Hanukkah
