What's On Our Mind ...

On Tuesday we marked the 83rd anniversary of Kristallnacht. It was a turning point in the autocratic takeover of Germany by the Nazis. No longer did the Third Reich engage in antisemitic rhetoric. Now it was condoning and fomenting violence. That horrific night set in motion the mass extermination of Jewish communities across Europe.

Each year we stop and remember this date to honor the victims and be sure we do not forget where hateful speech and policy can lead. Today we see antisemitism and hate in every part of our life. All these years later, it has not ended.

The Proud Boys, a far-right, neo-fascist hate group, showed up to “stand watch” at a recent school board meeting in North Carolina. Dressed in their black and yellow uniforms, the Proud Boys conjured up images of Hitler’s violent, paramilitary Brownshirts.

At local Michigan and Ohio school board meetings, parents gave the Nazi salute, which Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) defended during a Senate hearing. These school board meetings are now a hotbed of antisemitism as debate has raged over COVID policies. That hate will only spread throughout those communities and beyond.

The GOP is allowing and even fanning the hate. We know what to expect during this campaign season with their bigoted, hateful campaign themes. They can’t win on policies, so they will embrace a culture war laced with antisemitism, hatred, and bigotry.

They receive help with this from their members on the Hill. Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) tweeted out this week - while we were reflecting on and commemorating Kristallnacht - that she has much in common with the Nation of Islam and its leader Louis Farrakhan. Her vile behavior continues to get no condemnation from her party.

Remembering our painful past will not prevent us from a painful today or tomorrow - but it can be a lesson. This must inspire us to speak out and work to defeat all forms of hatred.

Call your Senators and urge them to confirm nomination of Deborah Lipstadt as U.S. Special Envoy to Monitor and Combat Antisemitism. This is a critical position in our fight to end the hate.

Do more than just remember. Act.

ISRAEL

Top Israeli defense officials say the country is preparing for a possible armed conflict with Iran and its proxies. U.S. and Israeli leadership changes are thawing relations between Israel and Jordan. The climate crisis is pushing the neighbors even closer together. Israeli officials are preparing for "the next war": children becoming vulnerable to a vaccine-resistant COVID variant.

ANTISEMITISM AND BDS

Vice President Kamala Harris condemned the singling out of Israel spurred by 'anti-Jewish hatred'. White supremacists are using a trial about the 2017 Unite the Right rally in Charlottesville as an opportunity to spew the hate they’ve been banned from some social media platforms for expressing. In a UK poll, most respondents did not know how many Jews perished in the Holocaust.

CHOICE

Fearing an impact to their business, companies are speaking out against abortion restrictions. Twenty Democratic attorneys general back a challenge to several restrictions on abortion in Indiana, including a ban on prescribing medication via telemedicine. Montana lurches right as it passes its first anti-abortion restrictions in a decade.

RELIGION AND STATE

The Supreme Court listened to arguments over what religious rights the state must accord inmates on death row. As a country that protects religious diversity, phony religious objections to vaccines hurt us all. A federal appeals court agreed to reconsider a challenge to COVID mask orders affecting students in religious schools.

BEYOND THE CORE

After Sandy Hook, the NRA formed its pro-gun strategy without any compromises. America's gun infatuation is a threat; the Supreme Court could make it worse. As the U.N. climate conference wraps up, see how pledges of countries to reduce their fossil fuel use match up to the pace of climate change.

POLITICAL BYTE

Facebook announced changes to its ad-targeting policies, but they will do little to stop campaigns from reaching specific voters. While donors threatened to shun the GOP after January 6th, Republicans are outraising Democrats. Nonetheless, GOP recruitment struggles give Democrats hope in the 2022 Senate fight.

FYI

Although second Gentleman Doug Emhoff was thrown into politics, he is taking it surprisingly well. Meet the Israeli-born artist who designed the first U.S. coin to feature an LGBTQ+ person. Read about how Jewish delis are evolving even as pastrami and matzoh ball soup become a rarity across the U.S.

The Last Word

"When Jews are targeted because of their beliefs or identity, that is antisemitism. That is unacceptable.”

— Vice President Kamala Harris
