On Our Minds...

In the same week that Florida Governor Ron DeSantis proudly declared his anti-choice stance on national television, an important event took place in Ohio: voters defeated a ballot initiative aimed at making it more difficult to protect abortion rights within the state's constitution.

The victory achieved was not just a minor win; it was a resounding success for abortion rights, with a decisive 14-point margin. Notably, this outcome occurred in a state where a Democratic Senate candidate suffered a 12-point loss. However this issue proved unite Democrats and Republicans. When it comes to the issue of abortion, voters demonstrated their influence at the ballot box regardless of party affiliation.

Numerous polls consistently indicate that more than 60 percent of Americans believe abortion should be legal in most or all cases. This sentiment was also reflected in exit polls from the previous year's election, where a significant number of voters expressed support for abortion rights. This trend has repeatedly manifested in elections that feature abortion on the ballot.

The significance of voters and their actions cannot be understated. Today, we have a former president who faces multiple indictments due to his failure to respect one of the most sacred acts of our democracy—voting and election results.

As we gear up for the 2024 election, we must remain acutely aware of what's at stake. Our ability to safeguard our rights and secure victory hinges on our willingness to vote based on our core beliefs. The GOP establishment has often downplayed the importance of such critical issues and their impact on voters. However, our commitment to fighting for every vote, regardless of party affiliation, remains steadfast.

The power to change this country and to protect our rights ultimately resides with the voters themselves. Expanding the Democratic majority in the Senate and once again securing the majority in the House will depend on the work we put in between now and election day.

THE LAST WORD

"House Dems will find common ground with the other side of the aisle whenever possible. And fight extremist behavior by right-wing ideologues whenever necessary.

-Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY)
