OUR MADAME SPEAKER

JAC Leadership with Speaker Pelosi. l to r: Hollis Wein, Marcia Balonick, Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA), Rep. Jan Schakowsky (D-IL), Stacy Rudd

For nearly 20 years Nancy Pelosi has served in various leadership roles in the House of Representatives. As the first and only woman to serve as Speaker of the U.S. House, she showed women they can and should have a powerful voice and a seat at the table.

Under her guidance, major legislation, such as the ACA, was passed that has impacted the lives of millions of Americans. Her dedication to our country and our democracy serves, and will continue to serve, as an inspiration to all. She paved the way for countless women to choose a career in public service.

JAC has been proud to support Speaker Pelosi since she first ran for Congress in 1986. She met with us in Washington, spoke at our conferences, and was our guest speaker at our annual luncheon. As a friend of JAC, she understood the importance of JAC's mission and the need for our voice to be heard.

Speaker Pelosi saw the power of women and what we could accomplish by acting together for what we believe in. For Speaker Pelosi, it isn’t just about breaking down the walls that can hold women back, but also about building up the coalitions to strengthen women.

She has always put country over politics, even on that horrific January 6th. With a calming resolve, she committed the House to continuing the counting of the electoral votes thereby guaranteeing that Americans would once again awake in the morning to a democracy, even if it was battered and bruised.

As she gets ready to turn the gavel over, we know that she will continue to work toward her vision of the future, which she always says, “centers around our children - it always centers around our children. So anytime anybody asks me what are the three most important issues facing the Congress, I always say the same thing: 'Our children, our children, our children.’

Today’s children and the generations to follow will always be grateful to Nancy Pelosi for making this world a better place. JAC looks forward to continuing our work with Speaker Pelosi and fulfilling her vision.

SPECIAL NOTE:

In last week' s EZ read we featured an op-ed authored by JAC Senior Fellow Lily Cohen for her Northwestern University newspaper titled: “I Am More Proud of my Jewish Identity Than Anyone Can Ever Hate Me for It.” This week she became the victim of an antisemitic act when copies of her op-ed were pasted together with “From the River to the Sea” painted in red across it and hung in front of the library. FYI

THE LAST WORD

“A new day is dawning on the horizon, and I look forward, always forward, to the unfolding store of our nation, a story of light and love, of patriotism and progress, of many becoming one. And always an unfinished mission to make the dreams of today the reality of tomorrow."
