A RECIPE FOR DISASTER
My nearly 102-year-old mother-in-law always tells me, "Family gives you a place in this world." As I reflect on her words now, I feel that truth more deeply than ever, in a world that seems to be spinning out of control. I find myself yearning for that sense of belonging, that steady anchor of love and connection. I need something solid beneath my feet that grounds me—not just physically, but in my heart and soul.
Sadly, however, family has become collateral damage in these hyper-politically charged times. As we approach Thanksgiving, a time for gathering and reconnecting with family, clouds hang over many of our tables. Political differences and candidate selections have wedged between the turkey and stuffing. Some families won’t even get to the pecan pie because political discourse overwhelms the night. What is usually a joyful time can easily turn as toxic as the political world.
But if we let our political differences get the best of us, we will have lost much more than a presidential election. We will lose what it means to be part of a family, however messy that may be. No argument is worth that high price.
This Thanksgiving, first and foremost, let’s count our blessings. And remember there is so much more that unites than divides us. If we are to survive, then we must learn to look past our political differences and find common ground. There are many battles ahead that we will need to fight. But let’s not bring those battles to Thanksgiving, as hard as it may seem.
