On Monday evening, the sun will set, and the Jewish community worldwide will gather to welcome Rosh Hashanah, the start of a new year. This sacred holiday offers a moment to pause amidst the chaos of daily life, take a breath, and reflect on the past year and the limitless promise of what lies ahead. It is a time that has always been filled with hope, renewal, and the belief that brighter days are possible.
This year, however, hope feels more difficult to find. We start the new year in a turbulent and unpredictable world. More than 710 days after Hamas’s brutal attack on Israel, the fate of our hostages remains painfully uncertain. Israel’s effort to eliminate Hamas and bring our people home has faced condemnation from allies and has even caused divisions within our families and community. At times, even the future of our Jewish homeland seems fragile.
We have watched with heartbreak as antisemitism and hate have grown. Political violence is rising. Our democratic norms are weakening. Meanwhile, the world is turning against Israel and the Jewish community. It all feels unsettling and frightening, leaving us feeling lost.
Jewish history consistently teaches us that even in the darkest moments, we are not powerless. When called to action, we respond. This includes: continuing our calls for the return of our hostages; fighting against hatred; safeguarding our democracy; and keeping alive the dream of a strong and secure Jewish future, as well as strengthening the foundations of our country.
This holiday is not only about looking inward but also about reaching outward. It is about choosing courage over despair, unity over division, and action over silence. The year ahead undoubtedly will bring challenges. But together we can face it with strength and an unshakable commitment to our people and our democratic values at home.
