In December of 2021, through its “Each One, Reach One” campaign, the RCSD began addressing two major issues: employment opportunities and safe schools. Since then, the District has been sharing information with community partners about positions available including jobs as teachers, administrators, and paraprofessionals. Additionally, violence prevention is a way to keep school safe.
After convening its initial group of community partners in December, the District expanded these efforts to include representatives from St. John Fisher College and members of law enforcement at the state, county, and city level. On March 10, 2022, St. John Fisher College announced that it would offer RCSD students the opportunity to participate in its Urban Scholars Program, which is available to students who live in the City of Rochester. The college pledged $40,000 dollars per student over the course of four years.
On Friday, April 8, the District welcomed Trini Ross to be its guest speaker at the Arc of Jesus Ministries. Ms. Ross, the U.S. Attorney for the Western District of New York, lead the theme for the program, which was “Breaking the Chains of Violence in Rochester.”
On Wednesday, June 1, many of the same community partners who gathered at St. John Fisher College in March will rejoin with one another to continue the formation of this community consortium.
At 5 p.m. on Thursday, June 2, the Board of Education will conduct a work session to discuss safety in schools. At this meeting, Board members will engage with various stakeholders, including students, parents, community members, and employees, members of the District’s safety and security team, and Superintendent Dr. Lesli Myers-Small.
Additionally, on Friday, June 3, the District will recognize wear orange day, a national gun violence awareness day. The District is asking everyone in the community to wear orange to honor the lives lost to gun violence and to raise awareness about this public health crisis and racial justice issue.
