Walk to School Day
TOMORROW -Join students, families, and school leaders around the country to celebrate the benefits of walking to school during International Walk to School Day.

International Walk to School Day is a global event that involves communities from more than 40 countries walking and biking to school on the same day. It began in 1997 as a one-day event. Over time, this event has become part of a movement for year-round safe routes to school and a celebration – with record breaking participation – each October.
Prospective Parent Open House
Please reach out to friends and neighbors with children who will enter kindergarten next year and invite them to Selwyn’s Prospective Parents Open House on Thursday, October 11 at 9:30 am . Prospective parents can hear from our principal, one of our Kindergarten teachers and other Selwyn representatives and take a school tour led by an existing Selwyn parent. Those attending should bring a photo ID and arrive 15-20 minutes early for check-in.

If you would like to volunteer to help at the Open House, please sign-up here
Red Friday!

If your child has not received their Red Ribbon Reading shirt, they will be getting it on Friday. If your student already received their shirt to wear to a field trip, please make sure they wear it on Friday !

If your company will match your donations, please take the necessary steps to get the ball rolling. Sometimes it takes companies additional time to get their matched funds turned into our school.

Thank you for your continued support of Selwyn and Red Ribbon Reading !
Demystify Test Scores
Having trouble deciphering your child’s test results? Mrs. Vulgamore will be conducting an informative meeting for K-5 parents October 18 at 6:00 pm in the media center. She will review Reading 3D and MAP testing. All parents are welcome!

Questions? Please contact Mrs. Vulgamore.
Friday Night Lights
Please join us for Friday Night Lights on October 19, 5-7 pm in the bus lot to tailgate Selwyn style before the Myers Park football game! This family-friendly event will include the Myers Park cheerleaders and band, a DJ, Libretto’s pizza, Bucks Ice Cream, Sunset Slush, raffle prizes and more.

Your child will bring home a pizza order form and information on how to bid in the blind auction and purchase raffle tickets . Additional copies of the forms are available on the PTA website. Pizza and adult football tickets can also be purchased online. All raffle ticket purchases and pizza orders are due Monday, October 15 !

Please consider volunteering at this event to make it a fun evening for the kids! Sign up here to help.

Wear Pink Next Tuesday
In recognition of Breast Cancer Awareness month, all students and staff are encouraged to wear PINK on Tuesday, October 16th .

In the United States, breast cancer is the most common kind of cancer in women and every 2 minutes, one case of breast cancer is diagnosed in a woman. In 2018, more than 260,000 new cases of invasive breast cancer are expected to be diagnosed in women and more than 2,500 cases in men in the U.S.

National Breast Cancer Awareness Month is a chance to increase awareness of the disease and to raise funds for research into its cause, prevention, diagnosis, treatment and cure.
Volunteers Needed
Volunteers are needed for a lot of fun events coming up! Friday Night Lights, Staff Snacks, Lunch Helpers, Selwyn’s Open House, School Store Helper and more to come. Please visit the PTA website and go to Volunteer Today tab to sign up to help at these events.
What is the Character Education Recognition Program?
Each month a character trait is highlighted and students are encouraged to practice the trait.

Books and quotes about the month's character trait are shared.

Each grade level will learn songs, and create skits featuring a trait and will perform at a Character Education Assembly.

Students who exemplify the month's trait are recognized at the monthly Character Education Assembly. Every student will be recognized during the year and receive a Character Superstar Certificate and key chain.

October's Character Trait is responsibility .

" The price of greatness is responsibility." -Winston Churchill

Grazing Tray
Are you looking for a healthy after-school snack idea for your child? Try a grazing tray! It’s easy – all you do is take an empty muffin tin and fill it with healthy snacks and leave on the counter for your child to enjoy when they get home from school. Ideas for your tray: apples and nut or sun butter, vegetables and their favorite dip, grapes, trail mix, cheese, popcorn, almonds, etc. They will love the variety!
