RRR Pledges Now Due
Red Ribbon Reading officially ended on Sunday, August 30 and it is now time to collect the pledges from sponsors you gathered last Spring.

Please click HERE to submit your child’s hours and find payment options if you have not done so already. The online form must be completed and your pledges paid by September 18 for your child to be eligible for any RRR top reader prizes.

We can’t wait to celebrate our children’s success and reward their efforts. Please contact the RRR Committee with any questions.

MAP Parent Training Session
Please view the link and PowerPoint presentation below to access the MAP Parent Training session that took place last Thursday. The recorded session can also be found on the Selwyn website under "School Announcements."

This week all students in K-5 will take MAP Reading and next week will be MAP Math. Students in Kindergarten - 3rd grades will take MAP Reading Fluency the week of September 21. Your child's teacher should have communicated the testing schedule in their weekly email.

Please call the school at 980-343-5835 if you have any questions.

"BOO" Outreach Project
In lieu of our separate grade level outreach projects, this fall we are encouraging ALL grade levels to participate in a new, fun school wide project.

Selwyn PTA will be selling Halloween themed yard signs to benefit Communities in Schools, a local nonprofit that is dedicated to empowering students and setting them on the path to success. Selwyn families are encouraged to purchase yard signs to share with neighbors, friends, and/or family. We hope to create a fun “BOO” game in our neighborhoods.

100% of the net proceeds will be donated to Communities in Schools. This way we can all safely participate in a festive October activity while giving back to our community.

Be on the lookout for information on how to preorder signs. Questions? Contact Auguste Olson or Desi Wilson.

Do you have 30 minutes a week to spare?
Want to make a difference? As you plan your volunteer commitments for the 2020-
2021 school year, please consider serving as a learning buddy for a student at Selwyn.

We are especially in need of any volunteers who speak Spanish.

Need more information about Learning Buddies? Please contact Molly Putnam.

Brain Breaks: Just Breathe

Let's face it - our children's brains can get tired and children reportedly have high stress levels these days. They need to "unplug."  So, if you notice your child becoming antsy in their seat or starting to look unfocused, they need a break. According to the American Academy of Pediatrics, meditation and relaxation can calm the nerves and decrease stress hormones.

Let's teach them how to stop, focus and just breathe...
  • It only takes a few minutes each day. Pediatricians report that preschool children benefit from a few minutes a day and grade school children benefit from 3-10 minutes twice a day.
  • Try incorporating deep breathing into your children's daily bedtime routine.
  • Remind children to take a few deep breaths before answering a difficult question at school or taking a test.
  • Deep breathing can help children manage strong emotions.
  • Sitting still can be difficult for some kids so a movement-based meditation such as yoga is another option.
