Virtual Curriculum Night & PTA Meeting

Please mark your calendar for Selwyn Elementary's Virtual Curriculum Night on Thursday, September 24 starting at 5:30 pm. The evening will begin with a welcome from Dr. Harris, a brief message from the PTA followed by the classroom visits. Look for Zoom information coming soon.

Citizens and Scholars Program

Dr. Harris and Mrs. Carrubba will open up the season of the Citizens and Scholars programs by recognizing our selected students with the trait of open-mindedness. Each classroom teacher will show the Citizens and Scholars program on Friday, September 25 at 8:00 am during their morning session with their class. We are looking forward to recognizing our students!

RRR Pledges Now Due
.
Red Ribbon Reading officially ended on Sunday, August 30 and it is now time to collect the pledges from sponsors you gathered last Spring.

Please click HERE to submit your child’s hours and find payment options if you have not done so already. The online form must be completed and your pledges paid by September 18 for your child to be eligible for any RRR top reader prizes.

We can’t wait to celebrate our children’s success and reward their efforts. Please contact the RRR Committee with any questions.

"BOO" Outreach Project
.
Let’s Get into the Halloween Spirit and “BOO” Some Good in Our Neighborhood and Community, Too!

In lieu of separate grade level service projects this fall, Selwyn is excited to announce our new Fall outreach project: the sale of festive BOO yard signs that will benefit Communities In Schools of Charlotte. CIS-Charlotte is a local nonprofit that is dedicated to supporting and empowering local students to set them on the path to success.

BOO yard signs will spread cheer throughout our neighborhoods and Selwyn community as we surprise friends and neighbors with these festive Halloween decorations. We will be selling BOO yard signs starting September 23 through September 30 for $10 each. CIS-Charlotte will receive 100% of the net proceeds from the sale of all yard signs.

The window is short for our BOO sign sale in order to ensure signs are available for pickup in the beginning of October. Selwyn’s BOO yard signs are both a trick and a treat – they are perfect for getting into the “spirit” of Halloween and bringing our school together while supporting others in the greater Charlotte community. 2021 school year, please consider serving as a learning buddy for a student at Selwyn.

We are especially in need of any volunteers who speak Spanish.

How to Keep Children Active During Remote Learning

With remote leaning, children can become less active. A normal school day includes recess, walking between classrooms and gym class weekly. So, if you notice your child becoming antsy in their seat or starting to look unfocused, they need a break.  Health experts recommend kids are active for 30-60 minutes a day to burn off energy, improve focus and reduce eye-strain from staring at a screen.  Being active also gives kids a chance to de-stress. Consider scheduling a recess during the day.

Outdoor Ideas:
  • Kick or throw a ball around
  • Go on a walk. Ride bikes or scooters
  • Jump rope, hopscotch
Indoor Ideas:
  • Create an obstacle course that may be as simple as "Run upstairs, grab this from the bathroom, run back down the stairs, run around the house twice."
  • Yoga and dance
  • Give them chores
