Every Day Eagles at McKinley Elementary this month had the privilege of walking in the annual downtown Joplin Christmas Parade!

Principal Jason Riddle said that about 135 students qualified as Every Day Eagles, meaning they've attended school at least 90% of the time since school began in August. One of McKinley's attendance initiatives this year has included bright yellow attendance vests for students who reach that 90% threshold and it's been such a big hit that his staff knew they needed to get creative with more ways to capitalize on that incentive.

"We thought our kids would love the chance to march in the Christmas parade while wearing their yellow vests," said Riddle. "It was a pretty popular incentive! We had about 125 of our eligible kiddos show up, all decked out and ready to represent their school."

The Every Day Eagles campaign is in place across the district as a way to encourage strong attendance as we continue to recalibrate after the effects of COVID-19. Director of Student Services Jordan Dickey said the district is making progress on growing back to pre-COVID attendance numbers, but creative and intentional strategies are still needed to move the needle.

"I love McKinley's yellow vests and parade incentives for our 90% attendees," said Dr. Dickey. "It highlights the fact that perfect attendance is not the only celebration. The kids and families who are trying hard to get to school most days will end up making a big difference in our students' success rates."

Eagles Giving Back

FTC & JHS donate to Christmas of Hope

Classes at Franklin Tech and Joplin High School gathered together recently to collect funds in support of the local Christmas of Hope campaign! Working together, and aided by donations from other buildings and staff around the district, FTC's Lorin Curtis presented a check for $5,500 to benefit a joyful Christmas for local foster kids. We love the way our Eagles are continuously committed to helping their peers! Thank you for your leadership on this annual fundraiser, Mr. Curtis!

Teacher Proud Tuesday!

December's Teacher Proud Tuesday winner was Shawna Sampson at Irving Elementary!

Shawna was nominated by a parent, who said "Mrs. Sampson is an incredible teacher that pours her heart into her students and makes learning incredibly fun. The students thrive in her classroom and grow so much. Mrs. Sampson helped our son learn to love reading in a way we didn't think possible. He went from knowing basic CVC words in the beginning of the year to reading chapter books by the end of the school year. We are so grateful for her love and guidance. She is one stellar teacher!"

Teacher Proud Tuesday winners will be randomly chosen and recognized on the second Tuesday each month through a partnerships with GOCSD. Please celebrate the AMAZING teachers in Joplin Schools - nominate a teacher for Teacher Proud Tuesday!

A Message from the Superintendent

While pandemic measures in Joplin Schools are thankfully many months in our rear-view mirror, the truth is that we - along with educators across the nation and world - are still recovering from those effects. Even before DESE's new Annual Performance Report (APR) was released to us last year, we knew that our post-pandemic assessment and attendance scores had been hit hard and were in need of careful improvements.

I am pleased to share that thanks to the hard work of our educators, students, and in many cases, their families, this year's district APR has risen a substantial amount. There are several factors that influence that score, but I believe a lot of those successes can be tied to meaningful improvements in MAP proficiency and student attendance results. I want to congratulate our teams across the district for their efforts in implementing their school improvement plans and chipping away at the specific, data-driven action steps they've put in place to help reach their goals. I'm a big believer that when you have a plan, and you work the plan, the plan will work for you. And this year's APR is certainly proof of that.

The work that's been happening in each classroom, in each building, all over Joplin bears out our district-wide motto from our school kick-off in August: Choose Challenge. Joplin's teachers and support staff at every grade level have chosen to embrace the challenges because they know what's at stake: the education of our community's children. We choose that challenge daily by learning that we can "do hard better." I'm honored to work alongside such dedicated, skilled teams.

While I'm incredibly proud of the ways our staff are leaning into their improvement plans, I also want to assure our parents and community members that we understand this is no time to rest. Our plans do not stop at this current goalpost. They continue throughout the next several years with more improvements to come. Improvements to student attendance rates, which have seen small but mighty gains, with much more needed. Improvements in assessment preparedness and benchmark standards. And improvements in our overall collaborative efforts to impact school climate, culture, safety, and effectiveness.

I'm excited about our next steps and the momentum we have as we help Joplin's children prepare for successful futures. I wish each of you a Merry Christmas and a restful winter break. It's been a great first semester, Eagles.

Sincerely,

Kerry Sachetta

Awesome Eagle Alert!

We know our bus riders are in good hands with Joplin Schools bus driver Ms. Debbie!

Earlier this month, one of Ms. Debbie's elementary students began to experience a medical emergency on the school bus, and Ms. Debbie handled the situation with care, calm, and skill until emergency personnel arrived to help. In times like these, it's about more than just following the correct protocol - it's about being dedicated to the children in our care, which was expertly accomplished by Ms. Debbie.

She was also supported by a fantastic team of Transportation Department coworkers throughout the event (we're looking at you, Cody, Henry, and Travis!). Many hands make light work, and many hearts keep Joplin's kids safe. Ms. Debbie is new to Joplin Schools this year, but she brings with her about 10 years of school bus driving experience, preparing her to be right at home in Eagle Nation.

"I do it because I love my kids," Debbie said. "These are really good kids and their parents are really good too. It's a great route."

Joplin Schools Director of Transportation Travis Wait said Debbie is a wonderful asset to the district, and he's proud of her professionalism and skill when confronted with an emergency. He also wants to extend his gratitude to district Route Coordinator Cody Harris, whose immediate service was instrumental during the event.

"I am very proud to be working with Debbie and Cody," said Wait. "They are both valuable members of our transportation team and exemplify the knowledge and care that we strive for. They make our students their number one priority each and every day."

Thank you for going above and beyond, Debbie and Cody!

Community Connection

It's the most wonderful time of the year! Especially thanks to one of our generous Eagles, Carlos, who's helping his kindergarten classmates at Irving Elementary stay warm this winter.

Carlos' family's businesses, El Vaquero Joplin and Lucy's Mexican Restaurant, donated brand new coats to Ms. Wallace's kindergarten class earlier this fall, putting smiles on faces all around. Carlos' family said, "We're thankful that we are able to do it and show our kids that it's better to give." Thank you for spreading joy and warmth in your school, Carlos!

Building Spotlight:

Duenweg Education Center

Peek into this Joplin Schools campus for a look at what makes them tick. Thanks to Director Chawn Howard for the comments below!

Professionally: One of the most remarkable aspects of our team is our collective expertise in behavior strategies. Through extensive training, we implement effective behavior strategies that reduce problem behaviors and foster the development of age-appropriate replacement behaviors. The commitment and knowledge of our staff in this area is truly commendable. Our teachers also have an exceptional ability to design individualized, data-driven methods for academic instruction tailored to the unique needs of our students. This personalized approach ensures that every student receives the support and guidance required to succeed academically. Their dedication and perseverance allows us to create a positive and supportive learning environment.

Physically: DEC is home to the Beacon Behavior Center (BBC) and the Communication Behavior and Social Skills programs (CBSS). BBC is overseen by a cooperative of 14 area school districts, while CBSS is a Joplin Schools program specifically designed to meet the needs of students with diverse communication and social skills abilities. Previously, our building served as Duenweg Elementary School and a Joplin Schools Early Childhood program. We have added additional classroom space and an accessible gym to accommodate our growing student population, ensuring that every student has the space they need to thrive.

Purposefully: We are all united in our mission to make positive changes in the lives of our students. Together, we strive to continuously learn and grow in our skills as educators, so that we can better serve our students. It is this collaborative spirit that sets us apart and makes our institution truly special. At Duenweg Education Center, our focus is preparing our students for their eventual return to their home schools. We believe in equipping them with the necessary skills and confidence to be active participants in their own education. By emphasizing both academic and personal growth, we empower our students to succeed beyond the classroom.

Personally: DEC staff meet each afternoon as a team to talk about the successes and challenges we had that day. This is an incredibly supportive way to remain connected to our purpose. But we also like to have fun together as a team and with our students! DEC puts on a Trunk or Treat event every year, and it's always a highlight for our staff and families. We invite staff from other programs to join which creates a sense of community and foster positive connections within our school. Another fun and unique event at DEC is our Christmas store. Our very generous community partners provide a wide array of giftable items, which our students can come "shop" for, free of charge. The gifts then head over to our gift-wrapping station so the kids can take gifts home to their parents and siblings for Christmas.

Looking Forward with Intention

The 2023-25 Long Range Facilities Committee has been at work this semester to understand and identify the future facility needs of our district in order to plan for an equitable and safe learning environment for all Joplin Schools students. The committee consists of nearly 30 district and community members convened by Assistant Superintendent for Operations Matt Harding, and will explore district needs for about 18 months before bringing recommendations to the Board of Education.

During the first meeting this fall, the committee discussed their purpose and charge, touring Dover Hill and Jefferson Elementary Schools, where they paid careful attention to equity in learning spaces.

At the second meeting, held in November, members toured Stapleton and Kelsey Norman Elementary Schools. They also heard from Dr. Sarah Mwangi, Assistant Superintendent of Learning Services, about student enrollment numbers in reference to building capacity, programming, and staffing decisions.

The committee's goal during this first year of exploration is to tour every Joplin Schools elementary building, gaining knowledge about the district as a whole. Updates about this committee will be shared periodically throughout their work, with a final report of recommendations expected in 2025.
