December 17, 2020

Dear Bishop Watterson Alumni and Friends,

As we prepare for the coming of Jesus Christ, Bishop Watterson High School would like to wish you and your family a Blessed and Merry Christmas.

Please continue to share with your fellow alumni the importance of updating their information, so they too can receive this email newsletter and be kept up to date on events and happenings.

In the Development office, we are excited to announce the creation of The Bishop Watterson Family Scholarship. The Bishop Watterson Family Scholarship replaces the 2021 Eagle Gala, our yearly event which benefits tuition assistance and our Dominican Program. This scholarship replaces the Gala until we can safely gather again, hopefully in 2022. All proceeds from this scholarship will benefit tuition assistance. One-time donations and pledges are both welcome, with the minimum gift amount of $500. With your donation, your family name will be displayed on a scholarship wall in the school and a picture of your family will be shared on our school website and internal electronic bulletin boards if you would like. This is an opportunity for our Bishop Watterson family to help students in our community who cannot afford a Catholic Education. To contribute to this scholarship, please contact me at (614) 545-2139 or smanahan@cdeducation.org, or give directly by clicking on the button below.

To give to any of our scholarship or tuition assistance programs please click on the button below.

Thank you to everyone for their continued support. Stay safe and may God Bless you and your family.

Sincerely,
Scott T. Manahan
Director of Alumni and Major Gifts

In Service to Others

St. Lawrence Haven Volunteers Step it Up During the Pandemic

Prior to the pandemic, our Alumni Department provided service at St. Lawrence Haven, the sack lunch program run by St. Vincent DePaul, once a month. In lieu of our volunteers going to St. Lawrence Haven during the pandemic, they have been providing sandwiches, fruit, drinks, and treats for the patrons of St. Lawrence Haven twice per month since March.

Our bi-monthly delivery to St. Lawrence Haven during the pandemic has been overwhelming, thanks to the amazing support and generosity of our group. We have contributed over 15,000 sandwiches as well as a tremendous supply of fresh fruit, baked goods, cases of water and other drinks, chips, and treats.

In addition, we have participated in a toy drive to provide gifts to the families of St. Lawrence Haven during this Christmas season.

Thank you very much to all of you who have donated time, money, and energy to make this possible. We are truly blessed to have all of you in our Bishop Watterson community.

The need continues to be great and our plan is to continue collecting food to donate to St. Lawrence Haven during 2021.

If you would like to participate in this service endeavor, please email Terri Kernan at tkernan@cdeducation.org.
Class Reunions
Due to the current situation with the pandemic, all reunions that were scheduled for this year have been postponed.

Committee chairs, please let us know when you have new information to share.

Please email Terri Kernan at tkernan@cdeducation.org.
We will share details in our Eagle Extra and on our website.
We can also furnish you with contact information that we have on file.

Stay safe everyone!

Memorial Scholarships
Bishop Watterson Creates New Memorial Scholarships
to Honor Alumni

Brendan Foley Memorial Fund
A new discipleship initiative will begin in January at Bishop Watterson thanks to the generous support of the Brendan Foley Memorial Fund. Students will have the opportunity to participate in small discipleship groups which will encourage students to let Jesus be their guide as they build a community based on faith, hope and love. Brendan, a 2019 graduate of Bishop Watterson, was a ministry leader and athlete whose life and witness invited those who knew him to trust God more fully as he walked with them in the light of faith. Brendan died in November 2019 after a lengthy battle with cancer and his parents established the fund in his name to support Campus Ministry efforts at Bishop Watterson. To contribute to the fund, click on the button below.

Jerry DeTemple Memorial Scholarship
The Jerry DeTemple Memorial Scholarship was created in loving memory of one of Bishop Watterson's biggest fans. Jerry graduated from BWHS in 1969 and remained connected to the Bishop Watterson community throughout his life, with his nine brothers and sisters, two children, and extended family members also attending Watterson. Jerry was a wonderful husband, father, family member, and friend who lived a faith-filled life, always helping others in need. This scholarship has been established to help offset the cost of obtaining an education at Bishop Watterson for individuals demonstrating financial need.

Gifts to these funds can be made by clicking on the button below or by mailing a check to:

Student Council, with the support of Campus Ministry, sponsored a food drive for St. Stephen’s Community House (SSCH) which was an enormous success thanks to our Bishop Watterson families. We sent five vehicles with food stuffed in every corner and we are grateful to the BWHS Mothers' Club volunteers who drove the collection to SSCH.
“Our hearts are so full of thanks!" SSCH commented on our food drive photos on Instagram. "This will certainly help us feed the 3,000 families we are expecting for our Christmas Cares, Unions Share Program. Thank you!”
