Friendly Parking Reminder

For the safety of our students and the Hyde Park community, it is extremely important that we:
  • Follow St. John's car line procedures (view car line information).
  • Keep school driveways clear during drop-off and pick-up.
  • Respect our neighbors by not blocking driveways or streets when street parking.
  • And, please do not park in the Four Green Fields parking lot adjacent to the Middle Division.
It's Time to Make Change!

What is it?
This year, both the Middle and Lower Divisions will participate in Change for Change, St. John’s traditional Lenten practice. Change for Change is our way of following the ancient Christian practice of helping the needy (especially during Lent), which is fortified by Positive Psychology’s research results that we find more happiness in giving than receiving.

Students, faculty, and staff are encouraged to take “change”—the money that we would typically use to treat ourselves to something nice but not necessary—and intentionally offer this money to the charity chosen by our own eighth grade class, helping those in need. This is not a “fundraising” event; the change we offer should come from money we would typically spend on ourselves, not from money we might raise from others.

How do I participate?
The change we offer will be collected in “piggy banks” stationed in central locations at both Middle and Lower Division campuses. Drop your change down the change pipeline, and hear it jangle on its way to the piggy bank at the bottom! Every little bit counts; St. John’s Church matches our school’s change offerings 2:1, so whatever we collect during Change for Change triples in amount, all given to a worthy cause helping those on the margins.

When will it begin?
Change for Change will begin this Monday, February 24, and last through Thursday, February 27.
Making Sense of the Coronavirus

Just last week, the World Health Organization declared nCoV (Coronavirus) a world health emergency. Due to the uncertainty of the Coronavirus and lack of vaccines and pharmaceuticals, the virus is much more worrisome to the public than the flu, but here is what we know:

  • Human coronaviruses were first identified in the mid-1960s, named for the crown-like spikes on their surface.
  • No independent school has reported a case of Coronavirus.
  • Coronavirus is responsible for roughly 1,000 deaths worldwide; all but two of which were in China.
  • In comparison, 150,000 U.S. citizens have been hospitalized for the common flu this season, and 8,000 have died from it (Hans Mundahl, Enrollment Management Association).
  • The U.S. State Department issued a level 4 advisory for China (do not travel) due to the spread of the virus and the likelihood that travel restrictions will be enacted with little or no warning.

Follow these CDC recommendations to help prevent the spread of respiratory diseases:
  • Avoid close contact with people who are sick.
  • Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth.
  • Stay home when you are sick.
  • Cover your cough or sneeze with a tissue, then throw the tissue in the trash.
  • Clean and disinfect frequently touched objects and surfaces using a regular household cleaning spray or wipe.
  • Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds, especially after going to the bathroom; before eating; and after blowing your nose, coughing, or sneezing.
  • If soap and water are not readily available, use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer with at least 60% alcohol. Always wash hands with soap and water if hands are visibly dirty.
  • The CDC does not recommend that people who are well wear a facemask to protect themselves from respiratory diseases, including COVID-19.
  • Facemasks should be used by people who show symptoms of COVID-19 to help prevent the spread of the disease to others.
