"Sign"

1 Corinthians 1:22 (KJV) For the Jews require a sign, and the Greeks seek after wisdom:

1 Corinthians 1:22 (NLT2) It is foolish to the Jews, who ask for signs from heaven. And it is foolish to the Greeks, who seek human wisdom.

1 Corinthians 1:22 (AMP) For while Jews [demandingly] ask for signs and miracles and Greeks pursue philosophy and wisdom,

1 Corinthians 1:22 (MSG) While Jews clamor for miraculous demonstrations and Greeks go in for philosophical wisdom.

Sign: any visible thing, any motion, appearance or event which indicates the existence or approach of something else. A wonder; a miracle; a prodigy; a remarkable transaction, event or phenomenon. Through mighty signs and wonders. Romans 15:19. Luke 1:621. Some visible transaction, event or appearance intended as proof or evidence of something else; hence; proof; evidence by sight.

Greek: semeion [say-mi’-on] an indication, especially ceremonial or supernatural: - miracle, sign, token, wonder. Strong's Talking Greek & Hebrew Dictionary. Of a "sign" as a warning or admonition, e.g., Matt. 12:39, (c) of miraculous acts; John 2:11 "the Jews ask for signs," RV, signs of God's power and love, but these were not the signs which they sought … They wanted signs of an outward Messianic Kingdom, of material greatness for the chosen people. 1 Cor. 14:22; Vine's Expository Dictionary of Old Testament and New Testament Words.

On a very special Jewish program called the Messianic Vision, I once heard a Colonel in the Israeli Army tell of an incident that he had experienced during the time of the Six Day War in 1967, when Israel took back a huge portion of the country around Israel. They secured their victory with a monstrous air attack on Egypt and completely disengaged the Egyptian Airforce and had complete command of the skies.

There was a land battle that took place with this Colonel’s involvement, and a trench was formed against the onslaught of the advancement of the Jordanian forces. The Jordanians were shelling the city of Jerusalem and Israel responded with a devastating counterattack on East Bank Jerusalem and the West Bank. What happened during this amazing battle was nothing short of a ‘semeion’[miracle]. As the enemy was attempting advancement, the Israelis were hiding in the trenches and one of the enlisted men, looked up over the trenches and immediately fell back into the trench and looked as if he were ‘shell shocked’. He was as white as a sheep and could not even talk. The Colonel was not sure if he had been shot but could find no injury to his person. So, the Colonel took it upon himself to look over to see what this young soldier had seen. Low and behold, he saw a band of angels working on the enemy camp, very similar to the days of Old Testament wars. As the Jordanian military fired off rockets and shells, the angels were repelling them back onto the Jordanian camp and the defeat was monumental. I am sure that the Jordanian Military were able to see this display of God being against them and they became faint hearted to say the least like the story of the 3 lepers.

On June 7, Israeli troops captured the Old City of Jerusalem and celebrated by praying at the Western Wall. This day the young Colonel’s life took a drastic change and later gave his heart to the Lord Jesus. Yes, Jesus is still in the miracle business and will demonstrate himself to you whenever you surrender your will to His and the results will be exceedingly abundantly above anything you can ask or think. The difference is you must be in faith and not question the authenticity of the Lord. This so many Christians find themselves doing. Look at reasons why something will work and not all the reasons why it won’t. It will change everything!!
