"Deep"

1 Corinthians 2:10 (KJV) But God hath revealed them unto us by his Spirit: for the Spirit searcheth all things, yea, the deep things of God.

1 Corinthians 2:10 (NIV) but God has revealed it to us by his Spirit. The Spirit searches all things, even the deep things of God.

1 Corinthians 2:10 (ESV) these things God has revealed to us through the Spirit. For the Spirit searches everything, even the depths of God.

1 Corinthians 2:10 (NLT2) But it was to us that God revealed these things by his Spirit. For his Spirit searches out everything and shows us God’s deep secrets.

Greek: bathos [bath’-os] = depth [5], deep [1], deep+g2596], deepness [1], deep thing [[1]. from the same as (bathus); profundity, i.e. (by implication) extent; (figurative) mystery: - deep (-ness, things), depth.            If one was to go off to college with the great expectation of having all the professors be a great inspiration and an amazing learning time, this would be the proper attitude of one attempting their plight with higher education. It should be the focus of all seniors who are serious about the expectation of gaining knowledge and understanding. Understanding is a bit more difficult without the aid of hands-on and being involved with the doing of the things one is learning.

My oldest son went off to college with the expectation of becoming an engineer and through the whole process, he walked on to the golf team at Ohio State and received the one spot that was available on the team competing with 50 other great athletes. He played 7 days a week and became one of the best players on the team which included a high school All American and a few All Staters. At one point he was the top player on the whole team and Coach Brown spoke to him and explained this to him. “In my 21 years of coaching at Ohio State, I have never had an engineering student on my team. I just don’t know how you do it, with my demanding schedule and the engineering departments time absorbing schedule.”

What happened was that my son needed to play 27 holes of golf a day and had an amazing amount of lab time plus his co-op time at Honda of America in Marysville, Ohio. He would get home at 3 am and be on the golf course at 6 or 7 am for his 27 holes. It was a grind, but I had taught him his whole life that nothing is impossible if he would only believe. This is what he did, and it paid great dividends.

So true is it with the Word of God and the deep things of God’s counsel which is the Word of God. It tells us of situations that are absolutely impossible and there is no way humanly capable of doing something that the counsels [deep things] of God present to us. God did not ask you to bring them to pass but simply step out by faith and be in a position that He can move in and show Himself to be true to His promises and demonstrate to you His power through your walk of faith.

This is what the world needs to see and experience, and this is the whole of what Jesus is getting across to us in this passage. These are the ‘deep things’ and they transcend the education and small things one may gain from a simple and non-Spiritual education or training from those who do not know God and His ‘deep things’.
