"Words"

1 Corinthians 2:13 (KJV) Which things also we speak, not in the words which man's wisdom teacheth, but which the Holy Ghost teacheth; comparing spiritual things with spiritual.

1 Corinthians 2:13 (NIV) This is what we speak, not in words taught us by human wisdom but in words taught by the Spirit, expressing spiritual truths in spiritual words.

1 Corinthians 2:13 (ESV) And we impart this in words not taught by human wisdom but taught by the Spirit, interpreting spiritual truths to those who are spiritual.

1 Corinthians 2:13 (NLT2) When we tell you these things, we do not use words that come from human wisdom. Instead, we speak words given to us by the Spirit, using the Spirit’s words to explain spiritual truths.

Words: An articulate or vocal sound, or a combination of articulate and vocal sounds, uttered by the human voice, and by custom expressing an idea or ideas; a single component part of human speech or language. Thus, a in English is a word; but few words consist of one letter only; a short discourse; Dispute; verbal contention; language; living speech; oral expression; promise; Signal; order; command; account; tidings; message; declaration; purpose expressed; affirmation; the Scripture; divine revelation, or any part of it; Christ; a motto; a proverb.

Greek: logos [log’-os] = word [218], saying [50], account [8], speech [8], Word (Christ) [7] = from (lego); something said (including the thought); by implication a topic (subject of discourse), also reasoning (the mental faculty or motive; account, cause, communication, × concerning, say (-ing), speech, talk, thing, + none of these things move me, utterance, work. Strong's Talking Greek & Hebrew Dictionary. The expression of thought, as embodying a conception or idea; a saying or statement; discourse, speech, of instruction, etc., e.g., Acts 2:40; 1 Cor. 2:13; 1 Cor. 12:8; 2 Cor. 1:18; 1 Thess. 1:5; 2 Thess. 2:15; Heb. 6:1; doctrine, e.g., Matt. 13:20; Col. 3:16; 1 Tim. 4:6; 2 Tim. 1:13; Titus 1:9; 1 John 2:7; Vine's Expository Dictionary of Old Testament and New Testament Words.

This word, words, is not the typical use of the Greek word Logos as often it relates to the Words of Christ, or this is how it is normally presented. Here it is specifically talking about the words and ideas of man, and we all know that the words that man speaks is drastically different than what God speaks.

We also know that from the abundance of the heart man [the mouth] speaks and this is the most direct idea of what is in the heart of man [male and female]. I know I have heard some horrendous negative words coming out of many a Christian’s mouth and when challenged about it, they deny what they had said by such thoughts as; ‘I was just kidding or you know what I mean’. I have even listened to so called believers use God’s name in vain and in essence, are cursing God in that they are applying some negative characteristic to Him, and this is very appalling to me and God.

I remember once when in college in the early 70’s I was playing handball with a good friend and I missed a shot. This made me so angry that I used God’s name in vain. Immediately upon doing so, I hit the racquetball court on my knees and hung my head in repentance. My friend wondered what I was doing and ask if I was Ok. I quickly answered the affirmative and the game went on. You see, my friend was as far away from God as one could get and I had fallen away to the point of doing such an awful word. God is not the damner, he is the blesser and these two ideas are worlds apart. It does not take very long and once the devil gets ahold of your tongue, he can do mighty destructive things in the life of an individual.

So, my friend, how do words relate to you in your life. Do you speak like the world? Do you speak fear and worry, failure and loss, or cliches that do not give God and His Word the Glory? Do you curse yourself, your family or friends with words that the world uses: scared me to death, the virus is going around, and everyone gets it; I will probably lose at that situation; everyone fails from time to time. Do you talk about sickness and disease, failure and shortcomings? Do you use the word can’t always in your vocabulary and are you fearful of trying something you feel strongly about and speak accordingly. These are all ‘curse’ words in the ears of God for He has made provision for all of it. This is tragically not God’s Words, but words of the world and they will quite simply keep you in bondage and shorten your whole life.
