"Freely"

1 Corinthians 2:12 (KJV) Now we have received, not the spirit of the world, but the spirit which is of God; that we might know the things that are freely given to us of God.

1 Corinthians 2:12 (NIV) We have not received the spirit of the world but the Spirit who is from God, that we may understand what God has freely given us.

1 Corinthians 2:12 (ESV) Now we have received not the spirit of the world, but the Spirit who is from God, that we might understand the things freely given us by God.

1 Corinthians 2:12 (NLT2) And we have received God’s Spirit (not the world’s spirit), so we can know the wonderful things God has freely given us.

Freely: At liberty; without slavery or dependence; without restraint, constraint or compulsion; without impediment or hinderance; Of every tree of the garden, thou mayest freely eat. Genesis 2:16. Without necessity or from divine predetermination; without obstruction; liberally or generously; gratuitously or of freewill or grace, without purchase; Freely ye have received, freely give. Matthew 10:8.

Greek: charizomai [khar-id’-zom-ahee] forgive [11], give [6], freely give [2], deliver [2], grant [1], frankly forgive [1]. (charis); to grant as a favor, i.e. gratuitously, in kindness, pardon: - deliver, (frankly) forgive, (freely) give, grant. Strong's Talking Greek & Hebrew Dictionary. "to show favor or kindness," as in Gal. 3:18, RV, "hath granted" ; then, to "give" freely, bestow graciously; in this sense it is used almost entirely of that which is "given" by God, Acts 27:24, in Rom. 8:32, "shall … freely give;" 1 Cor. 2:12, "are freely given;" Phil. 1:29, "it hath been granted". "Hath given" (said of the name of Jesus as "given" by God); Philem. 1:22, "It shall be granted unto you" (RV). In Luke 7:21, it is said regarding the blind, upon whom Christ "bestowed" sight (RV). The only exceptions, in this sense of the word, as to Divinely imparted "gifts," are Acts 3:14, of the "granting" of Barabbas by Pilate to the Jews, and Acts 25:11, 16, of the "giving" up of a prisoner to his accusers or to execution. Vine's Expository Dictionary of Old Testament and New Testament Words.

This powerful word is a derivative of the all-knowing and lifegiving word ‘Charis’ where we get our word for the ‘Grace’ of God which has so freely been granted to us without an intervention or work on our behalf. This gift is the pinnacle of the Christian life and is at its very core, the beginning of everything Christ has done and provided for us. Other uses of this word would be “bestow, deliver, deliverance, deliverer, forgive, forgave, forgiveness, and give”.

Perhaps the greatest scripture that defines this type of word is the great passage of promises defined in the NASB. 2 Peter 1:4 (NASB) For by these He has granted to us His precious and magnificent promises, so that by them you may become partakers of the divine nature, having escaped the corruption that is in the world by lust. The world is lusting after almost anything and everything. They are driven by what they can extract from this society and how it will place them in a higher and more comfortable position in life. When I was a kid growing up in Delphos, they had a great swimming pool at the Stadium Park and I spent a lot of time there, swimming, laying in the sun, playing basketball, baseball and football. In the swimming arena, the lifeguards made it very clear that you do not attempt to rescue a drowning person, for they are in a panic and will grab ahold of you and take you under, to save their own life and unable to rectify themselves out of the water. They are going under and taking you with them.

This well defines the world and their greedy, lustful attitude and it is all about them and what they can do for themselves and their family and it matters not how it hurts or destroys the other person. This is the role of politics and religion in our current society. Every decision they make effects a huge amount of folks and if they do not have God as their determiner, they are headed in a direction that will cause problems and will take them down. Don’t get near them because time is not on their side and they think that they are hiding their antics and are free from reaping what they sow. This is not the case and we as believers know what the truth is and we can and are praying about the mess that is developing in our country, especially the debt issue which is contrary to the teaching of Christ. Romans 13:8 (AMP) Keep out of debt and owe no man anything, except to love one another; for he who loves his neighbor [who practices loving others] has fulfilled the Law [relating to one's fellowmen, meeting all its requirements]. No nation should be in debt, for if anyone should learn to live within its means, it should be the servants of the people.
