Stumbling

Part 4 of 5

"Foolishness"

1 Corinthians 1:23 (KJV) But we preach Christ crucified, unto the Jews a stumbling block, and unto the Greeks foolishness.

1 Corinthians 1:23 (NLT2) So when we preach that Christ was crucified, the Jews are offended and the Gentiles say it’s all nonsense.

1 Corinthians 1:23 (GW) but our message is that Christ was crucified. This offends Jewish people and makes no sense to people who are not Jewish.

1 Corinthians 1:23 (TLB) So when we preach about Christ dying to save them, the Jews are offended and the Gentiles say it’s all nonsense.

Foolishness: Folly; want of understanding. Foolish practice; want of wisdom or good judgment.

Greek: moria [mo-ree’-ah] =foolishness [5]. from (moros); silliness, i.e. absurdity: - foolishness. Strong's Greek & Hebrew Dictionary. Denotes "foolishness" and is used in 1 Cor. 1:18, 21, 23; 1 Cor. 2:14; 1 Cor. 3:19. primarily denotes "dull, sluggish" (from a root muh---, "to be silly"); hence, "stupid, foolish. Vine's Expository Dictionary of Old Testament and New Testament Words.

The Greeks [the gentiles who were not Jews including the Romans and others] were as far away from the idea of a savior as one could get. After all, they had conquered the whole known world and was in complete authority over those who claimed to have a connection with this God they were supposedly worshiping. The Jew’s lifestyle and traditions provided nothing to the gentiles to want to follow the Jewish religion. There was no demonstration of power and light which could have drawn them in. No, the Jews were simply bound up in a state of religion that kept them slaves of the Roman empire.

So of course, when the gentiles heard of this crucifixion idea, it was a complete joke to them for the Jews held no credibility of anything with the gentile folks. I wonder at times how much different the spreading of the Gospel would be if the Church of Jesus Christ would walk and live in the fullness of the Word of God and not be complacent with ‘normal’ or better understood, the world. We have gotten comfortable and have placed ourselves in positions where, we really don’t need the help or assistance from an Almighty God. After all, we have our finances, our government, our doctors, our banks, any restaurants to satisfy our bellies and cars, houses, toys, and water and sewer, electricity and all the comfortable amenities of life.

Let me give you a little thought that I read about recently, and it was written in the guise of our government pushing for all electric cars. It was a scientist who had an opinion concerning our electric grid. He claimed that Russia or China or whoever, could send a missile into outer space, set it off up there and it would destroy the entire electric grid of the United States. That would be a disaster even now, let alone if we were at the dictates of the electric grid to just be able to travel to the grocery store. I read an article a while back that in the 1920’s, more than 75% of the United States lived on the farm and got their sustenance from such. Now less than 5% of the folks do that and even the farmers don’t have gardens, of which I am one.

You see, our world is not a comfortable and safe place to live, especially without the close watch of our heavenly Father and having His protection and guidance through it all. Unfortunately, many Christians are caught up into the foolishness of trusting man as His arm of protection and not putting their faith in the One and only One who can protect and defend us all.

Jeremiah 17:7 (NASB) "Blessed is the man who trusts in the LORD And whose trust is the LORD. Jeremiah 17:5 (NLT2) This is what the LORD says: “Cursed are those who put their trust in mere humans, who rely on human strength and turn their hearts away from the LORD.
