"Mystery"

1 Corinthians 2:7 (KJV) But we speak the wisdom of God in a mystery, even the hidden wisdom, which God ordained before the world unto our glory.

1 Corinthians 2:7 (AMP)But rather what we are setting forth is a wisdom of God once hidden [from the human understanding] and now revealed to us by God—[that wisdom] which God devised and decreed before the ages for our glorification [to lift us into the glory of His presence].

1 Corinthians 2:7 (NLT2) No, the wisdom we speak of is the mystery of God—his plan that was previously hidden, even though he made it for our ultimate glory before the world began.

1 Corinthians 2:7 (GW) We speak about the mystery of God's wisdom. It is a wisdom that has been hidden, which God had planned for our glory before the world began.

Mystery: A profound secret; something wholly unknown or something kept cautiously concealed, and therefore exciting curiosity or wonder; In religion, anything in the character or attributes of God, or in the economy of divine providence, which is not revealed to man. That which is beyond human comprehension until explained. In this sense, mystery often conveys the idea of something awfully sublime or important; something that excites wonder. Great is the mystery of godliness. 1 Timothy 3:9. Having made known to us the mystery of his will. Ephesians 1:9.

Greek: mysterion [moos-tay’-reel-on]= mystery [27]. from a derivative of muo (to shut the mouth); a secret or “mystery” (through the idea of silence imposed by initiation into religious rites): - mystery. Strong's Greek & Hebrew Dictionary. Phil. 4:12, mueomai, "I have learned the secret," [RevisedV). In the NT it denotes, not the mysterious (as with the Eng. word), but that which, being outside the range of unassisted natural apprehension, can be made known only by Divine revelation, and is made known in a manner and at a time appointed by God, and to those only who are illumined by His Spirit; The definition given above may be best illustrated by the following passage: "the mystery which hath been hid from all ages and generations: but now hath it been manifested to His saints" (Col. 1:26, RV). Spiritual truth generally, as revealed in the gospel, 1 Cor. 13:2; 1 Cor. 14:2 (cp. 1 Tim. 3:9). the Church, which is Christ's Body, i.e., the union of redeemed men with God in Christ, Eph. 5:32 (cp. Col. 1:27); 1 Cor. 15:51Vine's Expository Dictionary of Old Testament and New Testament Words.

We can see by definition the idea of mystery is simply a hidden principle of the Bible and at some point, the revelation of this principle. This is perhaps the most important factor in the reading and studying of the Word of God as it is God’s first and most important way He reveals himself to the Believers and the direction for life it offers. It is the main discourse between Jesus and Peter as Christ was attempting to get across to him who he was and how we are to maintain an idea of His presence and working in our life. Matthew 16:17-18 (AMP) Then Jesus answered him, Blessed (happy, fortunate, and to be envied) are you, Simon Bar-Jonah. For flesh and blood [men] have not revealed this to you, but My Father Who is in heaven. And I tell you, you are Peter [Greek, Petros—a large piece of rock], and on this rock [Greek, petra—a huge rock like Gibraltar] I will build My church, and the gates of Hades (the powers of the infernal region) shall not overpower it [or be strong to its detriment or hold out against it].

This is truly one of the great mysteries and until a person can grasp ahold of its understanding, they cannot see or enter the Kingdom of God. Mysteries are God’s way of keeping the hidden things of God away from the unbeliever, but because of the church’s lack of seeking and digging for the issues of the Kingdom of God, they so often spend a lifetime of never finding or enjoying these great mysteries, hidden for the Church.
