"Mighty"

1 Corinthians 1:26 (KJV) For ye see your calling, brethren, how that not many wise men after the flesh, not many mighty, not many noble, are called:

1 Corinthians 1:26 (NLT2) Remember, dear brothers and sisters, that few of you were wise in the world’s eyes or powerful or wealthy when God called you.

1 Corinthians 1:24 (MSG) But to us who are personally called by God himself—both Jews and Greeks—Christ is God's ultimate miracle and wisdom all wrapped up in one.

1 Corinthians 1:24 (BBE) But to those of God's selection, Jews and Greeks, Christ is the power and the wisdom of God.

Mighty: Very powerful; having great command. Very great or eminent in intellect or acquirements; Very strong or great in corporeal power; very able.

Greek: dynatos [doo-nat-os’] =possible [13], able [10], mighty [6], strong [3], power [1], mighty man [1]. from (dunamai); powerful or capable (literal or figurative); Strong's Greek & Hebrew Dictionary. "powerful, mighty", (1) of God, Luke 1:49, "mighty;" Rom. 9:22, "power" (here the neuter of the adjective is used with the article, as a noun, equivalent to dynamis); frequently with the meaning "able"; (3) of men: 1 Cor. 1:26; possessed of spiritual power, 2 Cor. 10:4. Vine's Expository Dictionary of Old Testament and New Testament Words.

The whole of the Old Testament is full of the times when Israel was reminded of their lack of strength and abilities to fight against their enemies. Every time the God of Hosts would have to intervene and step in to save the day. But there were men who trusted in the Lord and the power of His might to go before them to take down the walls, the splitting of the Red Sea, the fighting against great odds and would surrender the battle to the God Almighty who is ruler of heaven and earth. 1 Samuel 17:47 (NASB77) and that all this assembly may know that the LORD does not deliver [rescues] by sword or by spear; for the battle is the LORD'S and He will give you into our hands."

Don’t you just love that, my brother and sister, the Lord does not war and struggle with anything. He is just waiting on us to exercise our faith IN HIM to get God involved with our circumstances and the key word in this passage of Samuel is He will ‘give’ the enemy into our hands. Now that is the whole idea of the word ‘mighty’, and it is why not many mighty are called. So, who might this ‘mighty throng’ be?

I believe we can see it throughout the Word of God and it always points back to the folks who get educated, the business man who achieve certain successes [wealth and prosperity however he views himself], the athlete who does better than the average one, the social person who commands a following and anyone who has developed their sense of Pride from their own abilities and training.

I can say that untold times I have placed myself in a position of following the Word when it seemed so contrary to natural [fleshly] reason. People would use words like ‘common sense’ and ‘use your head you dummy’, and these were the lingo we spent most of our lives following. But one day, in a place of total confusion and distress, I had the Holy Spirit talk to me through His Word. 1 John 2:27 (NASB) As for you, the anointing which you received from Him abides in you, and you have no need for anyone to teach you; but as His anointing teaches you about all things, and is true and is not a lie, and just as it has taught you, you abide in Him. I had talked to the ‘mighty men’ and came up empty.

At that moment in time, I left the ‘world’ behind, and I knew of a certainty that if I spend my life studying and meditating on the Word of God, everything will work out and God would set my feet on a high place. That was 1978 more than 48 years ago, and God has truly fulfilled His Word in my life, and it came through saying, ‘Let God be true and every man a liar.’ Romans 3:4
