[30+]. from (pneo); a current of air, i.e. breath (blast) or a breeze; by analogy or figurative a spirit, i.e. (human) the rational soul, (by implication) vital principle, mental disposition, etc., or (superhuman) an angel, demon, or (divine) God, Christ's spirit, the Holy Spirit: - ghost, life, spirit (-ual, -ually), mind. Compare (psuche). Strong's Greek & Hebrew Dictionary. Primarily denotes "the wind" (akin to pneō, "to breathe, blow"); then, especially "the spirit," which, like the wind, is invisible, immaterial and powerful. The NT uses of the word may be analyzed approximately as follows: the wind; the breath; the immaterial, invisible part of man; the disembodied or unclothed,’ or naked man; the resurrection body; the sentient element in man, that by which he perceives, reflects, feels, desires; moral qualities and activities: as of bondage, as of a slave; timidity; good, as of adoption, i.e., meekness; faith; quietness; the Holy Spirit; the inward man; the new life; unclean spirits, demons, angels; divine gift for service; a vision; Vine's Expository Dictionary of Old Testament and New Testament Words.
The Bible helps on this word is immense and thus I cannot provide only a brief synopsis. However, the main use in this portion of Scripture is the Holy Spirit as evidenced by the NLT. Paul is simply referencing his own lack of power and ability to demonstrate what Jesus has spoken to us concerning for it is not a flesh thing but a Spirit thing and the two are with us to function together but by no means are they even close to being the same.
The Holy Spirit provides the power to live the Christian life and to do the supernatural that Christ has ask us to do. Acts 1:8 (AMP) But you shall receive power (ability, efficiency, and might) when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you shall be My witnesses in Jerusalem and all Judea and Samaria and to the ends (the very bounds) of the earth. Zechariah 4:6 (GW) Then he replied, “This is the word the LORD spoke to Zerubbabel: You won't {succeed} by might or by power, but by my Spirit, says the LORD of Armies. Judges 14:6 (NIV) The Spirit of the LORD came upon him in power so that he tore the lion apart with his bare hands as he might have torn a young goat. But he told neither his father nor his mother what he had done. This is the kind of power that God has presented to the body of Christ. Unfortunately, that power is and remains dormant in the life of most believers. This happens either through ignorance, laziness, disobedience, or a wrong spirit or attitude towards it in unbelief. This ought not to be.
