Let it Go

Part 2 of 3

"Forgetting"

Philippians 3:13 (NKJV) 13 Brethren, I do not count myself to have apprehended; but one thing I do, forgetting those things which are behind and reaching forward to those things which are ahead.

Philippians 3:13 (AMP) I do not consider, brethren, that I have captured and made it my own [yet]; but one thing I do [it is my one aspiration]: forgetting what lies behind and straining forward to what lies ahead,

Philippians 3:13 (NIV) Brothers, I do not consider myself yet to have taken hold of it. But one thing I do: Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead,

Philippians 3:13 (NLT2) No, dear brothers and sisters, I have not achieved it, but I focus on this one thing: Forgetting the past and looking forward to what lies ahead.

Forgetting: Losing the remembrance of; forgetfulness; inattention.

Greek: epilanthanomai [ep-ee-lan-than’-om-ohee: forget [7], be forgetful [1]: middle from (epi) and (lanthano); to lose out of mind; by implication to neglect Strong's Talking Greek & Hebrew Dictionary. "to forget, or neglect" (epi, "upon," used intensively), is said (a) negatively of God, indicating His remembrance of sparrows, Luke 12:6, and of the work and labor of love of His saints, Heb. 6:10; (b) of the disciples regarding taking bread, Matt. 16:5: Mark 8:14; (c) of Paul regarding "the things which are behind," Phil. 3:13; (d) of believers, as to showing love to strangers, Heb. 13:2, RV, and as to doing good and communicating, ver. Heb. 13:16; (e) of a person who, after looking at himself in a mirror, forgets what kind of person he is, Jas. 1:24. Vine's Expository Dictionary of Old Testament and New Testament Words.

Forgetting is always an act of faith as we take into our consciousness the idea of what lies behind, be it good or bad. As we all know and have experienced, the bad is difficult because we do not want to remember and the good is difficult because what we did yesterday, even though it is good, does us little if any benefit in what lies ahead of us. As we all have heard, you can’t live on your ‘laurels’, meaning the good or accomplishments of yesterday

I think of the many professional athletes who have grown to be poor and impoverished as life moves forward as they did well in the early years but completely fall apart after the mid-twenties when the body is not what it used to be. They never made the adjustment and life continued to move forward and this is a great tragedy. This also happens to young men and women who graduate from High School or college, only to be dumped into the real world and have no idea how to handle it. They were so successful in the early years but were never quite able to implement their dreams and plans. I once heard a statistic that less than 5% of college graduates have been successful in life, that is they accomplished the dreams and or goals that were prevalent in their earlier years.

Another such statistic is that less than 5 % of all the small business startups are still in business after 5 years. They get an idea, and it works for a couple of years and then laziness, a misconception of being in business for oneself and the idea of spending money they do not have. In other words, materialism takes control of the mindset of the bulk of the folks and without fail the thing comes tumbling down and absolute confusion sets in, and discouragement is the definition of the day. Forget the bad and do not leave lay the positive of life as life and death are consumed during the focusing on the failures and hardships. They should make you strong but unfortunately this is not the case.
