Doers

James 1:22 (KJV) But be ye doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving your own selves.

James 1:22 (NIV) “Do not merely listen to the word and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says”.

James 1:22 (AMP) “But be doers of the Word [obey the message], and not merely listeners to it, betraying yourselves [into deception by reasoning contrary to the Truth].”

James 1:22 (NLT2) But don’t just listen to God’s word. You must do what it says. Otherwise, you are only fooling yourselves.

Doers: One who does; one who performs or executes; an actor; an agent. One who performs what is required; one who observes, keeps or obeys, in practice.

I wanted to give you two perspectives into the doing of the Word that the Lord has so emphatically impressed on Bible readers. The NIV version is a little softer than the Amplified in that the words spoken in the AMP are much more pronounced and directive. I like to teach under this directive format for I have found that people are only going to listen to what they want to listen to anyways and the old saying is true, “You can lead a horse to water but you can’t make them drink”. I can’t help but feel that this is exactly what the Lord is saying to us here and the language should be strong. This thing is a matter of life and death. Not so much the heaven and hell issue but the blessing and cursing side of life.

Are we as Christians going to separate ourselves from the world or will we continue doing more of the same and not differentiate ourselves from the world and its exploits? Most of the believers think in terms of ‘smoking and drinking and cussing and chewing and going with the girls that do”. They believe that this is the separation of the world, but God’s idea of doing the Word is much greater than that. It is a matter of using the power that God has placed in all of us to demonstrate to the world that we are different.

I have never heard an unbeliever explain to me that he had laid hands on the sick and they recovered. Never heard an unbeliever say he spoke to a mountain, and it was removed. I never heard an unbeliever ever do anything that Jesus demonstrated for us to do with the power that is within us. Ephesians3:20 (AMP)20 “Now to Him Who, by (in consequence of) the [action of His] power that is at work within us, is able to [carry out His purpose and] do superabundantly, far over and above all that we [dare] ask or think [infinitely beyond our highest prayers, desires, thoughts, hopes, or dreams]” Now there is a ‘mouth full’. I hope you are getting the picture here. It’s not about our power but His power working in us. It is about our very simply doing the things that He directed us to do that makes us different from the rest of the people. He wants our light to shine into a dark world controlled by our adversary and reverse the curse in people’s lives the devil has burdened. 1 John 3:8 (NIV)8 He who does what is sinful [doubts] is of the devil, because the devil has been sinning [doubting] from the beginning. The reason the Son of God appeared was to destroy the works of the Devil. [through us His doers of the Word].

Jesus demonstrated to us how we are to function in dealing with our fellow man. It is of the utmost importance that you follow Him around and make notes of His activity and ministry. He even said something quite profound in all of this. John 14:12 (NKJV) "Most assuredly, I say to you, he who believes in Me, the works that I do he will do also; and greater works than these he will do, because I go to My Father. Are you Listening?
