Hebrew: kabod [kaw-bode’} glory [156] honor [32], glorious [10], gloriously [1], honorable [1]. rarely kabod, kaw-bode'; from (kabad); prop. weight; but only figurative in a good sense, splendor or copiousness: - glorious (-ly), glory, honor (-able). Strong's Talking Greek & Hebrew Dictionary. Kābôd often refers to both "wealth" and significant and positive "reputation" (in a concrete sense). The second emphasis appears in Gen. 45:13, where Joseph told his brothers to report to his "father… all my [majesty] in Egypt." Here this word includes a report of his position and the assurance that if the family came to Egypt, Joseph would be able to provide for them, can emphasize the position of an individual within the sphere in which he lives (Prov. 11:16). This "honor" can be lost through wrong actions or attitudes (Prov. 26:1, 8) and evidenced in proper actions (Prov. 20:3; Prov. 25:2). This emphasis then is on the relationship between personalities. The real benefit of this passage is the idea of we do something, and God will do something and that is where faith, trust, hope, effort, and trying mixes to accomplish the result, honor.
Honor attaches to it the idea of wealth, success, privilege and prosperity in all realms. Luke 2:52 (NASB) And Jesus kept increasing in wisdom and stature, and in favor with God and men. These acts all came from something the people did, not a prize or a present like is given to soccer kids for showing up to a game and expecting to be rewarded for it. Proverbs 3:1-4 (NIV) My son, do not forget my teaching, but keep my commands in your heart, 2 for they will prolong your life many years and bring you prosperity. 3 Let love and faithfulness never leave you; bind them around your neck, write them on the tablet of your heart. 4Then you will win favor and a good name in the sight of God and man.
Honor is truly a thing granted by something done and is true for even God. We don’t honor Him because He is God, even though we should, but we do so for what He has done for us and the great price that was paid for this act of love. Honor goes to whom honor is due, such as parents and or men who have accomplish a great deal, not to every person. If they have paid a price for their action, one must honor them for that action and not because they exist.
