Hebrew: aram [aw-ram’}; subtilty [1], crafty [1], prudent [1], beware [1], very [1]. a primitive root; properly to be (or make) bare; but used only in the derivative sense (through the idea perhaps of smoothness) to be cunning (usually in a bad sense): - × very, beware, take crafty [counsel], be prudent, deal subtly. Strong's Talking Greek & Hebrew Dictionary.
A man that regardeth reproof is prudent, is the Proverbs way of saying that one can advance in life to the positive, but there are some rules that need to be followed. The critical one is the learning of obedience to parents. God never says that the parents need to be perfect or be multimillionaires but simply be parents. The one who gave birth and raised the child. The one who took financial responsibility to look after, feed, clothed, shelter and instructed.
Just the fact that they are there is a positive sign of loving and supporting and encouraging. None of us have it right 100% of the time, so there must be room for error in this parenting relationship, enough so that there can be learning and gaining of wisdom no matter how good the teacher. We are all like sheep and have gone our own way, but that is not an excuse for not trying on the part of the child and the parents. Attempting to do the right thing is the key to the whole matter.
I have talked to many parents who are living a life of condemnation, thinking that they did not do enough for the child in the realm of raising them, yet was there all the time and gave strength, wisdom, and understanding through the experiences that they had, and the lessons learned. The problem is that the child did not come out the way they had expected and at best are disinterested in their parents or have gone down a pathway of destruction and rebellion.
My advice to you is that you remain encouraged because the child’s life is not over yet and many great restorations are still on the way. This is where we must believe God for, we know and understand the scriptures way of seeing things. Matthew 19:26 (NIV) Jesus looked at them and said, "With man this is impossible, but with God all things are possible." Matthew 19:26 (MSG) Jesus looked hard at them and said, "No chance at all if you think you can pull it off yourself. Every chance in the world if you trust God to do it."
