I am always please to share notes from members:
So, funny story — I first visited Otway during their Winterfest last year. They were offering a free day pass, and I thought, “Sure, why not? If I hate it, at least it didn’t cost me anything.”
I had never cross-country skied before. Zero clue what I was doing. But the second I walked into the rental shop, it just felt… friendly.
I was greeted by a lovely employee, Isabel, who helped me get my boots, poles and skis and even came out on the snow to make sure I was able to get them on right. Then a volunteer, Carolyn, gave me the quickest “how not to fall immediately” lesson ever.
I figured I would ski for 20 minutes, get tired, and go home.
Instead, I stayed for hours.
Everywhere I went, people were chatting, laughing, saying hi as they passed. No pressure. No judgment. Just a really welcoming vibe. I left thinking, “Okay… this is actually pretty awesome.”
A couple weeks later, I went in to the office and bought my annual membership from Aaron in the rental shop. He was great. So helpful. What a great staff.
Now I’m gearing up for another winter, and I’m actually excited to ski again. I visited Stride & Glide to get a full set of classic equipment that I LOVE!! I look forward to using them soon.
I’ll be in Kelowna over Christmas, so I’m planning to use the reciprocal pass to at Sovereign Lake, Kelowna Nordic, and Overlander while I’m there. These are all included with my Caledonia Nordic pass — which still blows my mind.
But honestly?
As much as I am excited to explore other places, Caledonia feels like my “home base” now. The people, the atmosphere, the trails… it’s kind of become my spot.
Not bad for someone who showed up for a free day pass and thought skiing “probably wasn’t their thing.”
Thanks Caledonia Nordic!
