Message from the President
At our AGM of the Caledonia Nordic Ski Club October 25, 2023, we said thank you to outgoing President Lance MacDonald for his 4 years of service and welcomed myself, Lanita Horning, as your new President. We also welcomed new and returning board members - Tim Roots (Vice President), Gretchen Prystawik (Secretary), Shane Sienaert (Treasurer), Paul Schuetz (Trails Director), Monica Mattfeld (Communications Director), Peder Nesset and Simone Lamarche (Programs co-directors), Jim Burbee, Mike Duck ( Competitions Director) and Andrew Watkinson (Facilities Director). All of these people have committed to volunteering their time and skills to govern our Club in the best way possible along with our General Manager, John Bowes, and his staff.
As our Club grows in membership, trails, programs and the necessary support infrastructure required, the challenge becomes how to best meet the needs of all the different user groups. This board will do it’s very best to do just that - it won’t always be perfect but at the core will be our common passion for cross-country skiing in all it’s expressions.
Several initiatives on the go include:
- hosting the Para Nordic XC Championships and the Para Nordic Biathlon Championships in Feb/March 2024. An incredible opportunity to showcase both Prince George and our world class facility at Otway. The volunteer effort required to host such an event is huge. Our very capable Kevin Petterson is heading up the ParaNordic Committee.
- the paved trail project which generated lots of interest at the AGM! CNSC was able to secure a large grant to begin bringing this long term strategic goal to life. We will spend the winter further planning this project, looking for more dollars to further support all aspects of the project and further communicating the scope.
- an application to secure new land tenure for CNSC. As you can imagine this is a complex, ongoing project and is currently in the approval process. Our present, very popular, dog trail network is on land owned by the adjacent gravel operation. The trails are slowly being chipped away at as the search for gravel continues. In order to maintain sufficient trails for all skiers including their dogs, we have to consider all possibilities. We will keep the membership updated on this process.
Those are the big things! There is so much else happening at Caledonia Nordic Ski Club over the season and it’s the smaller things that make up a fantastic community. I look forward to seeing you all out on the trails, at social events and our various programs. (Yes, it’s true, I will be coaching a Jackrabbit group on Tuesday evenings and Saturday afternoons).
Please feel free to message me at president@caledonianordic.com.
