Hands at Play: Developing Fine Motor Skills for Life

Young children are naturally curious. They learn about the world by interacting with their peers and by exploring materials with their hands. During their early years, children develop hand skills (fine motor skills) that they will need to be successful for the rest of their lives. They also learn to use their hands for important self-care skills, such as feeding and dressing themselves.


Some people believe that writing should be the focus of fine motor activities in preschool and pre-K programs. However, young children need to use fine motor skills in a wide variety of ways.

There’s no questioning the importance of reflecting on Black history, not just in February, but in every month of the year. But just as important is uplifting Black traditions, culture, and community as they exist in America today. These are a handful of my favorite recent picture books reflecting Black Joy.
