Principal's Corner

The building is relatively quiet after the end of year celebrations. It’s always a time of reflection as we look back on the year to recognize what went well and think ahead to how we can improve our practice with our students and families.

At the beginning of the year, we shared with you our goals of improving family engagement in different ways. Through our pillars of kindness is contagious, giving grace, promoting positivity, and no surprises, we hope that you and your child felt supported by our staff.  

Given the restrictions we’ve had the past several years, reconnecting with you, our families, was a priority. We were excited to welcome you back into the building and on our field trips. We could have in-person events such as playgroups and the Friday Family Education series. We increased our communication and welcomed your involvement in drop-in zoom sessions.  

There is always room for improvement, and I invite you to share your thoughts and feedback with me (mberke@csdf-cde.ca.gov) 

After the ECE children’s celebration, CSD had its graduation the following day. The seniors who had been in ECE each commented on how valuable their time here was and the impact that this program had on their education and now, post-education decisions. It meant so much to them that they returned to the playground after graduation to pose for one last picture together. They may be a little bigger on those steps and that goes along with the big dreams they have as they go out and make a difference for the next generation as Deaf adults.

My wish is that our ECE program lays the foundation for each child that supports them throughout their educational journey.  

To our K families: We will miss your child’s daily presence in our building. They now have a key to the building, and we hope that they, and you, will be back to visit. 

To our toddler, preschool, and prekindergarten families: We look forward to welcoming you back on the first day of school: Monday, August 21, 2023.

El edificio está relativamente tranquilo después de las celebraciones de fin de año. Siempre es un momento de reflexión cuando miramos hacia atrás en el año para reconocer lo que salió bien y pensar en cómo podemos mejorar nuestra práctica con nuestros estudiantes y familias. 

A principios de año, compartimos con ustedes nuestras metas de mejorar la participación familiar de diferentes maneras. A través de nuestros pilares, la bondad es contagiosa, brinda gracia, promueve la positividad y no tiene sorpresas, esperamos que usted y su hijo se sientan apoyados por nuestro personal. 

Dadas las restricciones que hemos tenido en los últimos años, reconectarnos con ustedes, nuestras familias, era una prioridad. Estábamos emocionados de darle la bienvenida nuevamente al edificio y en nuestras excursiones. Podríamos tener eventos en persona como grupos de juego y la serie Friday Family Education. Aumentamos nuestra comunicación y agradecimos su participación en las sesiones de zoom sin cita previa.

Después de la celebración de los niños de ECE, CSD tuvo su graduación al día siguiente. Cada uno de los estudiantes del último año que habían estado en ECE comentó lo valioso que fue su tiempo aquí y el impacto que tuvo este programa en su educación y ahora, en las decisiones posteriores a la educación. Significó tanto para ellos que regresaron al patio de recreo después de la graduación para posar juntos para una última foto. Pueden ser un poco más grandes en esos pasos y eso va junto con los grandes sueños que tienen a medida que salen y marcan la diferencia para la próxima generación como adultos sordos.

Mi deseo es que nuestro programa ECE siente las bases para cada niño que los apoye a lo largo de su viaje educativo. 

A nuestras familias K: Extrañaremos la presencia diaria de su hijo en nuestro edificio. Ahora tienen una llave del edificio, y esperamos que ellos y usted vuelvan a visitarnos.

A nuestras familias de niños pequeños, preescolares y prekínder: Esperamos darles la bienvenida el primer día de clases: lunes 21 de agosto de 2023.

Wow! We completed a full year of Preschool!! We are still in awe at how much everyone has grown since the beginning of the year

For the past two months, we have been learning about “Community Helpers”; firefighters, postal workers, and pizza makers. Our students had so much fun using their vivid imaginations at our dramatic play center. For example, during our firefighter unit, students pretended and created new problems such as saving a cat who was stuck in a tree. The students worked together, created a plan, and rescued the cat. Also, our students enjoyed pretending to be mail carriers and writing letters to friends, and they especially enjoyed stamping letters and playing with bubble wrap at our sensory table. Lastly, we got an opportunity to make actual pizzas in our class and ate them afterwards. It is safe to say that our preschoolers do have a future in baking pizzas…YUM! Our students loved learning about Community Helpers. We read many books and students practiced re-telling stories in the correct story order, they did great!  

For the last two weeks of school, we learned about summer, swimming safety, and played with sand/water.  

We hope everyone has an amazing summer! Can’t wait to see you again on campus this fall.

¡Guau! ¡¡Cumplimos un año completo de Preescolar!! Todavía estamos asombrados de cuánto han crecido todos desde el comienzo del año

Durante los últimos dos meses, hemos estado aprendiendo sobre "Ayudantes de la comunidad"; bomberos, trabajadores postales y pizzeros. Nuestros estudiantes se divirtieron mucho usando su vívida imaginación en nuestro centro de juegos dramáticos. Por ejemplo, durante nuestra unidad de bomberos, los estudiantes simularon y crearon nuevos problemas, como salvar a un gato que estaba atrapado en un árbol. Los estudiantes trabajaron juntos, crearon un plan y rescataron al gato. Además, nuestros estudiantes disfrutaron fingiendo ser carteros y escribiendo cartas a amigos, y disfrutaron especialmente estampando cartas y jugando con plástico de burbujas en nuestra mesa sensorial. Por último, tuvimos la oportunidad de hacer pizzas reales en nuestra clase y las comimos después. Es seguro decir que nuestros niños en edad preescolar tienen un futuro en la preparación de pizzas... ¡YUM! A nuestros estudiantes les encantó aprender sobre Community Helpers. Leímos muchos libros y los estudiantes practicaron volver a contar historias en el orden correcto, ¡lo hicieron muy bien!  

Durante las últimas dos semanas de clases, aprendimos sobre el verano, la seguridad en la natación y jugamos con arena/agua.  

¡Esperamos que todos tengan un verano increíble! No puedo esperar a verte de nuevo en el campus este otoño.

Kindergarten has had an amazing wrap up to our year! In Science, budding zoologists have done research learning about animal habitats, diets, characteristics and interesting facts. The future entomologists studied insects, and enjoyed having earthworms, red worms and caterpillars in class, while our future physicists learned about force and how to push and pull impact objects.  

In Social Studies, our historians compare life long ago and today. We have studied modes of transportation and community helpers. The cartologists were intrigued by maps and made our own map. All of this led them to think about what kind of career they want in the future.  

Our future actors also put on their first play, The Crayon Box That Signed. They all worked hard to learn their lines and work together as a class. They enjoyed performing for the families at our ECE Showcase in April. 

Our in-school time has been supplemented by field trips to the Oakland Zoo and Mia’s Dream Park

They have also been getting ready for their transition to Elementary school. They’ve visited the playground during PE to learn how to use the equipment and learn the rules for using them. They were excited about their visit to the 1st grade classroom to learn about 1st grade and in the elementary building.

Our K team are excited about their transition while at the same time, knowing that we will miss them next year!

¡El jardín de infantes ha tenido un final increíble para nuestro año! En Ciencias, los zoólogos en ciernes han investigado aprendiendo sobre los hábitats, las dietas, las características y los datos interesantes de los animales. Los futuros entomólogos estudiaron insectos y disfrutaron de tener en clase lombrices de tierra, gusanos rojos y orugas, mientras que nuestros futuros físicos aprendieron sobre la fuerza y cómo empujar y jalar objetos de impacto.

En Estudios Sociales, nuestros historiadores comparan la vida de hace mucho tiempo con la de hoy. Hemos estudiado modos de transporte y ayudantes comunitarios. Los cartólogos estaban intrigados por los mapas e hicieron nuestro propio mapa. Todo esto los llevó a pensar en qué tipo de carrera quieren en el futuro.

Nuestros futuros actores también presentaron su primera obra, The Crayon Box That Signed. Todos trabajaron duro para aprender sus líneas y trabajar juntos como clase. Disfrutaron de actuar para las familias en nuestro ECE Showcase en abril.

Nuestro tiempo en la escuela se ha complementado con excursiones al zoológico de Oakland y al parque Mia's Dream.

También se han estado preparando para su transición a la escuela primaria. Han visitado el patio de recreo durante la educación física para aprender a usar el equipo y las reglas para usarlo. Estaban entusiasmados con su visita al aula de primer grado para aprender sobre el primer grado y en el edificio de primaria.

¡Nuestro equipo K está entusiasmado con su transición y, al mismo tiempo, sabe que los extrañaremos el próximo año
