POLICY UPDATES - OCTOBER 2018

Voter Registration

November 6 is Election Day and it is right around the corner! First 5 Alameda County is getting the word out to families about why it's important to vote.  We created graphics in Spanish and English for social media posts that provide information on registering to vote, ways to find your polling place, and how to access your sample ballot.  Please share!

Public Charge

The proposed change in the "public charge rule" by the Trump Administration would decrease the chances of some immigrants getting a green card or visa if they use public benefits or programs. First 5 Alameda County released a statement opposing these proposed changes in the last FYI newsletter. The rule change was published in the federal register and is open for comment for the next 60 days.  It's important for organizations serving families impacted by this rule change to comment and to encourage families to submit comments.  The Protecting Immigrant Families website has statement templates and an easy way to enter statements into the federal register.

Kindergarten Readiness, A Call to Action

As we prepare for the development of our 2019 policy agenda, we will be hosting an event at First 5 Alameda County on Wednesday, October 17th, 9:00am-12noon called " Kindergarten Readiness, A Call to Action." Applied Survey Research will be presenting the results of our 2017 Kindergarten Readiness Assessment in addition to new longitudinal results comparing kindergarten readiness to third-grade success. Participants will also have the opportunity to weigh in on policy ideas related to the results.
