Message from your EI Supervisors
Dear Families,

It is hard to believe we are heading into the month of November. These past two months have gone by quickly, but it has been wonderful to have our students back in our buildings and programs in-person. We thank our families for your diligence in implementing the DCIU Health and Safety Plan in Early Intervention. DCIU continues to be vigilant in our practices in order to keep our students and staff safe and healthy.

We recognize that the times we are living in continue to bring about challenges every day. The resiliency that we see in our staff, students and families continues to amaze and inspire us.

For this EI Newsletter we will focus on Transition to School Age (Transition to Kindergarten). It’s often hard for our kindergarten eligible Early Intervention families to believe that kindergarten is just around the corner, but it is never too early to start the discussion and planning around this next step in a child’s education. We hope this early start helps families become more educated and aware of this process for your little one.

In the upcoming months we hope that everyone remains safe, healthy and finds joy during the holiday seasons ahead. While things may look different, take time to cherish those you are thankful for.

Health and Safety Tip
Halloween is here. Please find these helpful tips and resources below from the CDC www.cdc.org

Steps to Take when Trick or Treating
Traditional Halloween activities are fun, but some can increase the risk of getting or spreading COVID-19 or influenza. Plan alternate ways to participate in Halloween

Make trick-or-treating safer
  • Avoid direct contact with trick-or-treaters.
  • Give out treats outdoors, if possible.
  • Set up a station with individually bagged treats for kids to take.
  • Wash hands before handling treats.
  • Wear a mask.

Calling all Kindergarten-Eligible Families
Students turning five prior to September 1, 2021 will be eligible for transition to Kindergarten next school-year. While it may seem a long way from the 2021-2022 school-year, it is never too early to begin the process.

During the month of November, K-eligible families will be receiving the following information via email:

-Letter of Explanation from DCIU Early Intervention
-Notice of Your Child’s Transition to School Age Meeting
-Notice of Options
-Intent to Register for Kindergarten or First Grade (Age Dependent)

Early Intervention Primary Teachers, Therapists and Service Coordinators will be available to answer questions or concerns. If you are unable to reach your child’s teacher or therapist, please email questions to EI@dciu.org.

Upcoming Parent Training Opportunities
DCIU will be holding a transition information meeting on November 10, 2020 from 6:30-7:30 via zoom. This will give Early Intervention staff the opportunity to discuss the Transition to School Age process and introduce parents to their School District Special Education Administration.
